At the 9th ADAC Westfalen Trophy held at the Nürburgring from 18 to 20 October 2013, the second works racing car from Mercedes-Benz Classic will celebrate its debut in historic motor sports. For the first time the Stuttgart-based brand is putting its Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II (W 201) onto the circuit for the “Youngtimer Trophy”, with Roland Asch at the wheel. Also in the line-up will be the Mercedes-Benz 220 SE (W 111), which has taken part in the Dunlop FHR Long-distance Cup organised by “Fahrergemeinschaft Historischer Rennsport e. V.” (FHR) since 2011. Fondly known as the “Racing Fin”, the car will be driven by Ellen Lohr and Amanda Stretton in the ADAC Westfalen Trophy race. Both racing cars hark back to the outstanding successes by Mercedes-Benz in the touring car races of the 1980s and 1990s (W 201), and also the 1960s (W 111).
A shining star in the German Touring Car Championships (DTM) will return to the track for this year's Westfalen Trophy: the Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II, the second car now being used by Mercedes-Benz Classic for historic motor sports events. The touring car celebrated the highlights of its era, which lasted from 1990 to 1993, when it achieved a triple victory in the overall rating in 1992 (Klaus Ludwig winning the championship ahead of his team colleagues Kurt Thiim and Bernd Schneider), and when Roland Asch won the vice-championship in the 1993 season. Mercedes-Benz Classic has configured the car specifically for competition in historic motor sports.
The touring car known as the “Evo II” for short is the second development stage of a DTM car based on the model series 201. For the 1989 season the engineers first developed the model 190 2.5-16 Evolution from the model 190 2.3-16 then in series production. The racing version was powered by the 245 kW (333 hp) M 102 four-cylinder engine with a displacement of 2,490 cubic centimetres. In the “Evo II”, the further development of this engine develops an output of 274 kW (373 hp). For homologation reasons, small series of 502 units each of the two “Evolution” variants were produced.
With its decision to use one of these cars as works car in future historic motor sports events, Mercedes-Benz Classic is continuing its strong commitment to the preservation of an undying motor racing tradition. “By taking part in the Youngtimer Trophy, we are further expanding our support for historic motor sports events,” says Michael Bock, Head of Mercedes-Benz Classic. “We started in 2011 with our 220 SE, which was constructed according to the authentic race regulations for the Dunlop FHR Long-distance Cup. The ‘Evo II’ is continuing this success story as a more recent and equally exciting racing car.”
The 220 SE (W 111) “Racing Fin” meets the provisions of Appendix K in the international sporting rules of the FIA (Féderation Internationale de l’Automobile). The car is primarily intended for use in the Dunlop FHR Long-distance Cup – the world’s major historic long-distance race series according to Appendix K.
The 9th ADAC Westfalen Trophy at the Nürburgring from 18 to 20 October 2013 is the perfect event for the appearance of the two Mercedes-Benz works cars: this is where the newly constructed “Tailfin” made its first race appearance for the FHR Long-distance Cup in 2011, and where the grey touring car with the unmistakable parking guides immediately achieved a class victory. In 1990, the Nürburgring was also the venue for the first competitive appearance of a 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II.
The three-day programme of the Westfalen Trophy is replete with motor sports highlights. All in all, more than 500 cars will take to the starting line in 11 race series. The motor sports festival in the Eifel region is particularly exciting because the Westfalen Trophy marks the end of the season for several race series – one of them the Dunlop FHR Long-distance Cup, where the drivers compete in a 2-hour race.

Mercedes-Benz 220 SE (W 111) “Racing Fin”
The great technical similarity of this racing car to the series production model is an authentic touch of the 1960s. The usual modifications include rigidifying the suspension components and some body parts, enlarging the fuel tank and optimising the engine characteristics.

Work on this second development stage began in August 1989, once again as a basis for a DTM racing car. Modifications included re-engineering the engine, and the impressive aerofoils on the “Evo II” led to a considerable reduction in aerodynamic lift. The Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II celebrated its racing debut on 16 June 1990, on the North Loop of the Nürburgring.

Roland Asch
Born 12 October 1950 in Altingen.
After training as a master automobile mechanic, Roland Asch initially began his motor racing career as a hobby, but achieved victories like a professional: after winning the German Hill-Racing Championship in 1981 and the German Motor Racing Trophy in 1983, he made his debut in the German Touring Car Championships (DTM) in 1985. In 1988, he became Vice-Champion in this series with a Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.3-16 entered by the BMK team. At the end of the 1980s, he won the overall rating in the Porsche 944 Turbo Cup three times and was champion in the Porsche Carrera Cup in 1991. From the early 1990s, he achieved a total of five victories and various good placings for Mercedes-Benz. In 1993, he became DTM Vice-Champion for the second time, then changed over to Ford in the Super Touring Car Cup in 1995. As a brand ambassador, Roland Asch remains closely associated with the Mercedes-Benz brand to this day.
Ellen Lohr
Born 12 April 1965 in Mönchengladbach.
Ellen Lohr came to motor sports from go-karting, in which she competed from 1979 to 1983. Her greatest successes were participation in the Junior Kart World Championships and a 1st place in the north-west German state go-kart championships. After races in the German Formula Ford 1600 series (German Champion in 1987) and a number of first racing appearances in the DTM (BMW) and in the German Formula 3 Championship with VW in 1989/90, the AMG-Mercedes team signed her up for the German Touring Car Championships. From 1990 she secured several good placings and a victory in Hockenheim in 1992. For the 1995 season, she changed over to the Mercedes-Zakspeed team and drove for the AMG-Mercedes Team Persson MS in 1996. In 1997, she drove a Mercedes-Benz in the European Truck Racing Championships. Since 2004 this lady racing driver has taken part in rallies.
