The most efficient, cleanest and most environmentally-friendly drive technology for every type of application – the leading Japanese brand Fuso, part of the Daimler Group, is to highlight the outstanding role of the world's best-selling Daimler Truck, the Canter. The light-duty truck is celebrating its world premiere at the IAA Commercial Vehicles show as the Canter E-CELL with battery-electric drive, and will be appearing together with the Canter Eco Hybrid, which highlights the efficiency of the hybrid drive, as well as the Canter Euro 5 with EEV, which is proof of the potential which can be achieved with diesel drives.
World premiere of the Canter E-CELL with battery-electric drive
The battery-electric driven Canter E-CELL represents the next logical step forward by Fuso on the road towards zero-emission mobility in conurbations and other environmentally-sensitive areas and is part of the global initiative "Shaping Future Transportation".
Fuso is presenting the one-off example of the Canter E-CELL in the form of a Canter 3S13 with a gross vehicle weight of 3.5 t. The batteries are accommodated within the chassis frame. Based on lithium-ion technology, they represent the latest state of the art and boast a substantial capacity of 40 kWh, sufficient for a range of around 120 km. This exceeds the daily mileage recorded in distribution or urban trade transportation applications. Even when the batteries have been fully depleted, when plugged into a
380-volt power network outlet they require a charging time of around just 6 hours.

Powerful electric motor with an output of 70 kW and high pulling power
The developers have installed the electric motor between the batteries and the driven rear axle. It produces a maximum output of 70 kW and a maximum torque of 300 Nm. Since, due to its nature, the greatest amount of torque of an electric motor is already available at the moment of moving off, the Canter E-CELL is guaranteed to provide appropriate performance. To help ensure the best possible range, the top speed of the Canter E-CELL is limited to 80 km/h, a level which is typical for trucks. Fuso will present the Canter E-CELL at the IAA Commercial Vehicles show as a chassis with a cab in the colour "natural white".
The future of the Canter E-CELL is promising: currently under discussion is the further use of the Canter E-CELL as part of an innovative fleet during the coming year.
Canter Eco Hybrid: successful fleet test in London
The Canter E-CELL one-off vehicle is the next step forward following the successful introduction of the Fuso Canter Eco Hybrid. Almost 1000 examples of the Canter Eco-Hybrid are now to be found on the roads of Japan, Australia, Hong Kong, Ireland and also the British capital of London, where they are taking part in a fleet trial.
As part of this fleet trial based on customer applications in London, ten Canter Eco Hybrid vehicles operating in nine fleets have covered a total of around 350,000 km over a period of two years. And the provisional conclusion after two out of three years is positive: the hybrid technology is working reliably and solidly. This applies both to the reliability of all of the hybrid-specific components, including the lithium-ion battery, and to operation and maintenance. Depending on its particular application, the Canter Eco Hybrid uses around 10 to 15 percent less fuel than a conventional light-duty truck, with correspondingly lower CO2 emissions.
The Canter Eco Hybrid's hybrid drive has been designed as a parallel hybrid for which the electric motor is installed behind the combustion engine and the clutch, but in front of the transmission. While the standard Japanese variant of the combustion engine produces an output of 96 kW (130 hp), for the applications in London a European unit is being used with an output of 107 kW (145 hp). The electric motor produces a maximum of 35 kW (continuous power of 14.5 kW) in each case, and a torque of 200 Nm. The lithium ion batteries have a capacity of 1.9 kWh and are designed for a service life of at least ten years or 300,000 km.
At the IAA Commercial Vehicles show, Fuso is presenting the standard Japanese version of the Canter Eco Hybrid as supplied to customers in Ireland. This customer vehicle is the first standard Canter Eco Hybrid to be sold outside of Japan.
Canter with diesel engine: meets Euro 5 with EEV emissions level as standard
The Fuso Canter is also an excellent example of the high potential of what can be achieved with the diesel engine. Its four-cylinder engine with a displacement of 3.0 litres is now cleaner than ever: all versions of the Fuso Canter meet the EEV emissions level. This is currently the strictest emissions level over and above Euro 5 and is complied with on a voluntary basis. The engine covers the entire gross weight spectrum of the Canter from 3.5 to 7.5 t. As such, the Fuso Canter Euro 5 with EEV is the first truck in its weight class to champion a compact, clean and highly efficient engine design throughout the model range.
A significant component of the efficiency concept of the Fuso Canter EEV is the new top-of-the-range engine with an output 129 kW (175 hp). This drive unit is a supreme example of downsizing: no other truck in this class with a gross vehicle weight of 7.5 t makes use of such a similarly compact engine.
The current engines are based on a modern design: featuring a long stroke (bore x stroke, 95.8 x 104 mm), twin overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, turbocharger with variable turbine geometry and common-rail injection, they technically outperform many competing models. The key data include:
- Displacement 3.0 l, power output 96 kW (130 hp) at 3500 rpm, max. torque 300 Nm at 1300 - 3000 rpm,
available for the Canter with a gross vehicle weight of 3.5 to 5.5 t
- Displacement 3.0 l, power output 107 kW (145 hp) at 3500 rpm, max. torque 370 Nm at 1600 - 2600 rpm,
available for the Canter with a gross vehicle weight of 3.5 to 7.5 t
- Displacement 3.0 l, power output 129 kW (175 hp) at 3500 rpm, max. torque 430 Nm at 1600 - 2800 rpm,
available for the Canter with a gross vehicle weight of 6.5 t and 7.5 t
All engine variants feature a closed particulate filter
All engine variants have a closed, zero-maintenance diesel particulate filter. In the two lower-powered variants, the exhaust gases are cleaned by a combination of cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), oxidation catalytic converter and particulate filter. The most powerful engine variant in the Canter Euro 5 with EEV additionally incorporates BlueTec technology. As a result, the Canter delivering 129 kW (175 hp) has the most advanced emission control currently available. Daimler BlueTec technology is also being put to use for the first time at Fuso, helping to ensure favourable consumption values.
The combination of BlueTec with exhaust gas recirculation and particulate filter is trend-setting: many experts see the combination of these three elements as vital for complying with the future Euro 6 emissions level. Buyers of a Fuso Canter are therefore investing in future-proof technology.
Perfectly matched six-speed manual transmission with joystick
In addition to modern engine technology, the Canter also owes its outstanding economic efficiency to a perfectly matched six-speed manual transmission. The particularly wide gear ratio spread, with short first gear ratio and long sixth gear ratio to preserve engine speed, provides good acceleration and reduces fuel consumption.
The space-saving joystick, positioned conveniently in the dashboard within easy reach, remains a unique selling point among cab-over-engine lorries. The Canter is a professional solution for professionals, as demonstrated by the choice of multiple final-drive ratios for each model.
Trimmer than ever: up to 5 t payload at a gross vehicle weight of 7.5 t
In general the Fuso Canter EEV is lightweight, a benefit of the downsizing with a compact engine and other reduction measures. The shortest variant of the Fuso Canter, for example, with a gross weight of 7.5 t, weighs in at just 2480 kg, including the driver and a 90% full fuel tank. This leaves 5020 kg for the body and freight – a record in this weight class.
Thanks to its compact cab-over-engine design the Fuso Canter also delivers unrivalled space efficiency – you can’ t get more cargo space in the same area. The manoeuvrability of the light-duty truck is no less impressive: it can turn in tight spots because, depending on the wheelbase, the turning circle is between just 10.6 and 17 m – the best prerequisites for efficient transport.
The custom Canter: frame, weight, wheelbase, cab
Professional truck design forms the backbone of the Canter – like the almost indestructible ladder-type frame which is available in three versions. The frame track, width and strength can be matched to the respective weight class and deployment scenario. Canter components, such as the driven rear axle with twin tyres, are highly durable: high permissible axle loads mean it can handle high point loads. The engine brake as standard is typical of the solidly crafted technology concept behind the truck.
One of the other main strengths of the Fuso Canter is the wide choice available within the product line. It is the only truck in its class to offer cabs in two different widths of 1995 mm (C-Series, "Comfort") and 1695 mm (S-Series, "Standard"). Both variants of cab have two passenger seats as standard. A double cab is also available on both the C-Series and the S-Series cab as an option.
The Fuso Canter comes in four weight classes ranging from 3.5 to 7.5 t. With its rugged frame construction and durable component units, the Fuso Canter also offers overload capability when not operating on public roads. The high rated axle loads highlight the resilience of the Canter, which is able to tackle high loads with ease and represents the ultimate in efficient transport.
New portal for body manufacturers
Thanks to its solid frame construction the Fuso Canter is predestined for use with all kinds of attachment bodies. To increase partner-like cooperation with body manufacturers, Fuso is also boosting investment in body manufacturer support. A new independent body manufacturer portal available in several languages now provides body manufacturers with extensive technical data, product information and body/equipment mounting directives. Alternatively, body manufacturers can also enter information on their products via the portal, which in turn can be used by trade partners and branch offices to provide end customers with specific information on special bodies for the Fuso Canter. The FUSO body manufacturer portal can be accessed with immediate effect at the following address: .
