Mercedes-Benz Atego: The Mercedes-Benz Atego sets benchmarks in medium-duty distribution transport

Sep 23, 2014
  • High-tech engines offering exemplary efficiency
  • Fully automated transmissions with six and eight gears
  • Stability Control Assist as standard, retarder optional
  • Broad spectrum of variants for the most diverse types of deployment
The Mercedes-Benz Atego is the European market leader in the distribution segment in the permissible gross weight range from 6.5 t to 16 t. In the revised version presented in the spring of 2013 it holds the benchmark position with respect to quality, reliability, repair and maintenance costs and longevity in the light and medium truck segments.
High-tech engines offering exemplary economy
The centrepieces of the powertrain are two fundamentally newly developed BlueTec 6 engines. In its light variants the new Atego offers a choice of four power categories with the newly designed 5.1-litre OM 934 four-cylinder engines. In distribution operations these optimally cover the output range from 115 kW (156 hp) to 170 kW (231 hp).
The higher output range for the new Mercedes-Benz Atego is covered by the newly developed six-cylinder common rail OM 936 engine offering a power output from 175 kW (238 hp) to 220 kW (299 hp) and a displacement of 7.7 l in three power categories.
Both engines offer superior power and torque compared with their predecessors. Yet in comparison with Euro V they consume significantly less fuel and much less AdBlue. The service intervals in long-distance operations have been increased to up to 120,000 km.
Fully automated transmissions with six and eight gears
The drive power from the new engines is transferred via the automated Mercedes PowerShift 3 transmissions with six or eight gears, which feature as standard in Germany. Gearshifting is by means of a convenient steering column lever. There is a choice of four transmission modes depending on the type of operation.
Manual transmissions with power-assisted gearshifting and six or nine gears are optionally available for the new Atego. The control levers of the manual transmissions are now ergonomically located directly in the instrument panel.
Stability Control Assist as standard, retarder optional
As standard the Atego features Stability Control Assist, known as ESP in the passenger car sector. Acting together with the efficient disc brakes all-round, a two-stage high-performance decompression engine brake ensures outstanding driving safety. As the only truck in its class, the new Atego from Mercedes-Benz comes with a wear-free permanent magnet retarder ex factory, supporting the overall braking system with a powerful 650 Nm of braking torque.
For all-wheel drive use, a new transfer case with permanent or manually selectable all-wheel drive is available. For municipal operations the range has been extended with a nine-speed transmission with crawler and optimised slow-driving characteristics.
Modern, ergonomic, functional and comfortable interior
The driver has the benefit of a modern cab interior. The cockpit design matches up to the Actros, Antos and Arocs in terms of design, ergonomics and functionality. Equipped with a multifunction steering wheel as standard, the Atego also offers a high level of operating comfort.
Broad spectrum of variants for the most diverse types of deployment
Incorporating a comprehensive range of optimisation measures on the chassis, rear axle guide, cab suspension system and the new steering system, the new Atego sets new standards in driving dynamics, driving safety and comfort. A total of 42 different model variants spanning 15 wheelbases, three cab lengths, four cab variants, 72 weight variants and 34 different power take-offs cover all customer needs and operational requirements in the distribution segment.
