(NYSE: CMI) announced that the companies have signed a memorandum of understanding establishing a global strategic partnership for medium-duty engine systems. Due to strong demand for its high-performance automobiles, Mercedes-AMG is to start the assembly of its twelve-cylinder engines in a new location at Daimler’s site in Mannheim. The traditional AMG “one man, one engine” philosophy continues to hold true: Each powerful AMG engine will be built completely by hand by just one engine fitter. The employees who currently assemble the twelve-cylinder engines at the AMG headquarters in Affalterbach will be shifted to the eight-cylinder engines lines.

For the production of the new OM 47x engine family, every detail of the manufacturing process has been optimised. The three areas of foundry, machining and assembly work perfectly together like the cogs of a well-oiled wheel. Their common goal: to build perfect-quality engines. To this end, several hundred million euros have been invested in a new manufacturing facility at the Mannheim plant.

The Mercedes-Benz Mannheim plant marked a milestone today when it produced the 7.5 millionth engine in its history. Hermann Doppler, head of worldwide truck engine production at Daimler AG, symbolically presented the milestone engine to Wolfgang Bork, managing director of Spedition BORK. The OM 501 series engine with BlueTec technology will be installed in a Mercedes-Benz Actros built in Wörth.
