Mercedes-Benz B 200 Natural Gas Drive and Mercedes-Benz ML 250 BlueTEC 4MATIC are "AUTOTEST Environmental Champions 2014". The two models took first place for the Compact Van and SUV categories respectively in the environmental ranking which the AUTOTEST product-testing magazine of the German AutoBild Group carries out annually together with the ÖKO TREND institute for environmental research. The independent Wuppertal-based institute delves beyond the vehicle's fuel consumption, examining the entire life cycle – from production through to recycling.
The ÖKO TREND institute has been publishing an environmental ranking for cars annually since 1997. To this end, the institute evaluates the environmental compatibility of several tens of thousands of data items relating to around a thousand car models in twelve categories. The stringent assessment draws on information relating to fuel consumption, pollutant emissions, the production process, logistics, recycling and the manufacturers' environmental management systems.
Mercedes-Benz also analyses the environmental compatibility of itsmodels throughout their entire life cycle – from production, through their long years of service to recycling at the end of their lives. This analysis goes far beyond the legal requirements. The Environmental Certificate and supplementary information are made available to the public as part of the "Life Cycle" documentation series, which can be accessed at http://www.mercedes-benz.com.
B 200 Natural Gas Drive: alternative for high-mileage drivers
The Mercedes B 200 Natural Gas Drive boasts reduced CO2 emissions, markedly cleaner emissions than with petrol or diesel and fuel costs which are some 50 percent lower than those of a comparable petrol-powered car. When running on natural gas, the fuel consumption of the 115 kW (156 hp) B-Class stands at only 4.2 kg/100 km – corresponding to CO2 emissions of 115 g per kilometre. The B 200 Natural Gas Drive operates according to the monovalent+ principle. This means that its engine generally runs on gas. For emergencies, however, there is a small 12-litre petrol tank on board.
ML 250 BlueTEC 4MATIC: range of up to 1600 kilometres
The ML 250 BlueTEC 4MATIC with an output of 150 kW (204 hp) gets by on 5.8 l of fuel per 100 km according to the NEDC (154 g CO2/km) and with its standard 70-litre tank it is able to cover around 1200 kilometres without calling in at a filling station. When fitted with the optional 93-litre tank, it even manages a stretch of up to 1600 kilometres between filling stations. AdBlue® emission control ensures that the diesel engine undercuts the limits stipulated by the EU 6 standard.
