Milk to the supermarket, parcels to the front door: the omnipresent delivery vans and trucks on our city streets are the backbone of the regional economy. Mercedes-Benz and Fuso are dynamic performers in this part of the commercial vehicles segment, with an extensive range of eco-friendly, cost-effective and versatile vehicles to meet every need. They offer a range of equally dynamic and driver-friendly models, from the new Mercedes-Benz Antos heavy-duty delivery truck to the Citan urban delivery van.
Multi-variant product range: short-radius distribution vehicles from Mercedes-Benz and Fuso
With the Mercedes-Benz Citan, Vito, Sprinter, Vario, Atego and Antos and the Fuso Canter, the two brands have the European short-radius distribution sector well and truly covered. GVWR figures of from1.8 tonnes to 26 tonnes, engine power ratings from 55 kW (75 hp) to 375 kW (510 hp), transmission systems including five-speed manual shifts, seven-speed torque converter and twelve-speed fully-automatic systems, diesel, hybrid and electric propulsion, panel vans and crewbuses, chassis and semi-articulated vehicles - no automaker has a wider range of short-radius distribution vehicles than Mercedes-Benz and Fuso.
The two brands are about to enter the 2013 model year with a long list of new short-radius distribution products. But the qualities of this stunning quintet of new distribution vehicles are best appreciated from behind the wheel, on the same transport routes they will be travelling in practice. The 40 vehicles included in the "Distribution Drive" press trial drive event will enable automotive journalists to do just that.
New: Mercedes-Benz Antos, a class of its own
The first heavy-duty truck specifically designed for short-radius distribution applications is something quite special. New engines meeting the Euro VI exhaust standard, fully-automatic transmission, unique safety features, Loader models with high payload ratings, Volumer models with ultra-low frames, driver cabs that are both functional and comfortable – the Mercedes-Benz Antos is the new benchmark in its class, and indeed a class all on its own.
New: Fuso Canter Eco Hybrid – alternative drive technology that makes good business sense
With up to 23 percent lower fuel consumption and only a moderate price supplement for enhanced hybrid propulsion, the new Fuso Canter Eco Hybrid protects both the environment and the customer's wallet. Other stand-out features include the Duonic dual clutch transmission, automatic stop-start function and electric start-up function. The new vehicle also has outstanding payload capacity and is an incredibly robust performer.
New: Sprinter with seven-speed automatic gearbox – dynamic, cost-effective and comfortable
The Sprinter has lifted its game even higher with a seven-speed torque converter automatic transmission system - the world's only van in this class to be fitted with this technology. The new transmission system is dynamic, cost-effective and comfortable. Other advances in the new Sprinter include the BlueEFFICIENCY package, fuel-saving long final drive ratio, and additional functions for ADAPTIVE ESP, fitted as standard equipment.
New: Vito E-CELL crewbus, an ultra-clean inner-city operator
There is also a newcomer in the Mercedes-Benz Vito range: the Mercedes-Benz Vito E-CELL is now also available as a seven-seater crewbus, an ultra-clean operator for inner-city and other environmentally sensitive urban areas, with zero emissions and as quiet as a whisper. The Vito E-CELL is the first van fitted with an electric drive system series-produced by an automaker.
New: Mercedes-Benz Citan, the efficient urban delivery vehicle
The Mercedes-Benz Citan completes the vans range with an outstandingly efficient, versatile and flexible urban delivery van. The Citan BlueEFFICIENCY system gets NEDC fuel consumption down to an unparalleled 4.3 litres/100 km.
Metropolis Düsseldorf
The North Rhine-Westphalia capital of Düsseldorf provides the ideal location for the press trial drive of Mercedes-Benz and Fuso distribution vehicles. This pulsating city of around 600,000 inhabitants is a major commercial, services and industrial centre. Düsseldorf is also an important trade fair venue and a port city. Germany's third-largest airport is located on the city's northern boundary. Düsseldorf is part of the ICE rail network, with most freight traffic processed at the nearby Neuss station. As a state capital, the city connects with a dozen or more autobahns and national highways.
Düsseldorf plant: leading vans plant in the heart of the city
The Daimler AG plant in Düsseldorf is one of the city's main industrial employers, with a workforce of approximately 6,500 in all. Daimler has been making vans here for exactly 50 years, and this is now the group's leading vans production base worldwide. More than 600 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vehicles and derived van models roll off the production line here each day.
The construction of the plant's forerunner more than 120 years ago was very much a "green fields" project, but major urban expansion since that time means that today the plant is well and truly part of its city. This clearly highlights the importance of a well-organised and eco-friendly supply logistics system. As the venue for the "Dynamic Distribution Drive" event, Düsseldorf is therefore itself an ideal specimen of an efficient supply and distribution operation in an urban location.
A total of around 280 trucks deliver 2850 tonnes of materials to the plant every day, from some 600 suppliers, many of them located within the region. Numerous service providers also have regular dealings with the plant. And each day approximately 210 trucks and eleven railway wagons leave the plant with their cargo of brand new vans. Around 80 of these trucks are bound for nearby port facilities, where the vans are loaded onto inland waterways vessels, one or two of which depart each week. This outstanding logistics achievement includes a key contribution from short-radius distribution vehicles perfectly tailored for their appointed task.
