The first GLA rolled off the production line at the Mercedes-Benz Rastatt plant. The new compact premium SUV was unveiled at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt in September. The range of models offered by Mercedes-Benz thus continues to grow, with the GLA being the fourth of a total of five new compact models.

Following the start of production of the smart fortwo electric drive and theB-Class F-CELL by the end of 2009, the company is now gearing up the production of its third electric passenger car: the Mercedes-Benz A Class E-CELL. With the electrified A-Class, Daimler aims to gain experience concerning the integration of battery-electric drives into four-seated vehicles and the use by customers in order to consistently apply this technology to other models in the future. A total of 500 locally emission-free vehicles based on the current A-Class will be manufactured at the Rastatt site.

Mercedes-Benz delivered its 2.5 millionth compact vehicle to a customer in March 2010. “We’ve set the standards for premium compact vehicles with the A- and B-Class, and we plan to further exploit our outstanding position in this segment in the future,” said Dr. Joachim Schmidt, Head of Sales and Marketing Mercedes-Benz Cars. “We want to attract new customer groups and also achieve growth in additional markets with the successor generation in this segment.”

Mercedes-Benz is further expanding its center of excellence for compact vehicles by enlarging its Rastatt plant with an investment of 600 million euros. In addition, a further 800 million euros will be invested in a new plant at the Hungarian location of Kecskemét. The Company’s total investments for these two locations thus amount to approximately 1.4 billion euros. The first vehicles of the successor generation to the current A- and B-Class will roll off the assembly lines in Rastatt from the end of 2011.
