Mercedes-Benz Travego: A new feature: Active Brake Assist 3, PPC – no other premium high-decker is safer or more economical

Sep 23, 2014
  • Active Brake Assist 3: full brake application when approaching stationary obstacles
  • Adaptive cruise control with additional stop and go function
  • PPC: anticipatory cruise control saves fuel
As the benchmark for advanced technology in a touring coach, the Mercedes-Benz Travego premium high-decker is an innovative model, especially when it comes to its drive system, environmental technology, engineered safety features and ease of operation. With the new Active Brake Assist 3 (ABA 3), the Travego once again confirms its reputation – no bus in the world is safer. The Travego is now also available with Predictive Powertrain Control (PPC), an anticipatory cruise control system, as an option. This can reduce the already low fuel consumption even further.
Active Brake Assist 3: full brake application when approaching stationary obstacles
Every generation of the Mercedes-Benz Travego high-decker touring coach sets new standards in safety technology. Once again the Travego has the edge on its competitors by including new Active Brake Assist 3. Active Brake Assist 2 was already able to brake suddenly when the danger of a collision arose. New ABA 3 is also able to initiate automatic emergency braking when approaching stationary obstacles.
The Travego with ABA 3 thus not only mitigates the consequences of a serious accident, but is also capable of independently preventing accidents within the limits of what is physically possible. Mercedes-Benz will be offering new Active Brake Assist 3 for the Travego from mid-2015.
Adaptive cruise control with additional stop and go function
Adaptive cruise control is the precondition for Active Brake Assist 3. When adaptive cruise control detects a slower vehicle travelling ahead, it automatically brakes the coach until a speed-dependent distance preset by the driver has been reached.
Adaptive cruise control with stop and go supports the driver in traffic jams. Whereas adaptive cruise control operates in a speed range from 15 to 100 km/h, the additional function extends that from 0 to 100 km/h. If the vehicle is at a standstill for no longer than two seconds, the distance controller remains active and will take the coach from a standstill back to the previously specified speed. However, if the two-second period is exceeded, the driver can reactivate adaptive cruise control.
PPC: anticipatory cruise control saves fuel
The Predictive Powertrain Control (PPC) driver assistance system is the first anticipatory cruise control in the world for touring coaches to intervene in the transmission control. Developed by Daimler Buses, it will be used in the Mercedes-Benz Travego from the middle of the year. PPC accesses the topographical data of motorways, trunk and main roads in Europe. Via GPS, PPC is aware of the position of the coach and calculates the route ahead with its height profile.
On the basis of this data, the current speed plus the specified speed, the present vehicle mass plus information on the engine output, torque and transmission, PPC not only controls the speed but also intervenes in the transmission and selects the appropriate gear.
PPC accelerates before steep inclines, selects the right gear in an anticipatory fashion when going uphill, reduces power before hilltops and, within the permitted speed range, allows the touring coach to freewheel on downhill gradients with light peak engine revs. In so doing PPC also uses EcoRoll technology: in cases where this is worthwhile, the technology selects the transmission's neutral setting and thus allows the touring coach to freewheel for longer to save fuel without any drag losses.
In short: with this tactic, and as tests have shown, PPC drives as considerately as an excellent coach driver. It does so with the utmost attention, around the clock, without any loss of stamina and with a perfect knowledge of virtually all the trunk roads in Europe. Daimler cites up to four percent less fuel consumption through the use of PPC in the touring coach. In an extensive practical test the prediction was even exceeded by a considerable amount.
