- Jury of independent experts tested the van in Finland
- Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 313 CDI takes first place
- Victory once again for the vans with the star
Stuttgart/Finland – Even in snow and the most frigid temperatures the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter once again demonstrated its strengths and outperformed its competitors. As in past years, eight editors accepted the invitation of the Finnish automotive magazine Auto, tekniikka ja kuljetus to subject the vans to rigorous tests. Competing against one another this year were vehicles from the large van segment, i.e. in the weight class up to 3.5 tons GVW.
Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 313 CDI takes first place
The numerous criteria are subdivided into standard categories including handling, fuel consumption, payload, and driving performance, as well as points of particular relevance for cold regions, such as cold-start behavior, heating, and mirror and window de-icing. In addition, the economy of the individual vehicles was evaluated, in terms of purchase costs and fuel efficiency.
In the end, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter was awarded the most points in the test and won the title. The Sprinter benefited from a perfect, consistent overall package. The jury praised its powertrain, the ergonomics of the driver’s seat, and the extensive service network. In the individual evaluations the van was assigned the top rating for 29 of 45 criteria.
The tested Sprinter 313 CDI is equipped with the new generation of the tried and tested ADAPTIVE ESP® system, in which two additional functions have been fitted as standard since the beginning of the year. The model’s new features include:
Brake Disk Wipe: In rainy conditions and on wet road surfaces this system periodically builds up a low braking pressure, which serves to “wipe” the water film from the brake disk. So if the driver needs to apply the brakes, full braking power is assured right from the start.
Electronic Brake Prefill: If the driver abruptly takes his or her foot from the gas pedal, this is interpreted as the first movement leading to a subsequent braking maneuver. The system reacts to this with a slight application of the brake pads to the brake disk. The clearance between the two friction surfaces has thus been practically reduced to zero when the driver steps on the brake pedal. This means faster reaction time when the brakes are applied.
Victory once again for the vans with the star
The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter has now emerged as the winner in the large van segment for the third time in a row. Last year the Mercedes-Benz Vito was the winner of the competition. So the Sprinter’s victory once again underscores the reliability and toughness of the vans with the star.
