Mercedes-Benz Classic Calendar 2014: Shooting Stars! Photography from Fans, for Fans
"Shooting Stars! – Photography from Fans, for Fans" – the title of this year's Mercedes-Benz Classic Calendar 2014 says it all. Friends of the brand with the star were invited to enter a photography competition by uploading their images to the Mercedes-Benz Museum page on Facebook and voting on other submissions. An expert panel of judges made the final selection. The calendar is available in the Mercedes-Benz Museum shop and online.
"We went in a completely new direction this year. Lovers of photography and cars from around the world took part in the competition for the Mercedes-Benz Classic Calendar 2014", explains Michael Bock, Head of Mercedes-Benz Classic, himself one of the judges. "The response on the internet was fantastic and making the final choice was not easy. I would like to personally thank everyone who took part in this remarkable project."
A magnificent building straight out of the Arabian Nights reflects in the engine cover of a Mercedes-Benz 220 S (W 180), while on an Alpine pass a Mercedes-Benz 300 D (W 115) poses in front of a panoramic view and a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL (W 194) racing car dashes through Brescia old town during the Mille Miglia. The Classic calendar showcases Mercedes in twelve very different settings. Cars (manufactured up to 1994) were captured in Germany, Italy, Malaysia, Dubai and South Africa, to name just a few locations.
Royce Rumsey, a photographer from the USA and member of the panel of experts, told us about the selection criteria: "The technical aspect is important, it was one of our main criteria. And ultimately I was looking to see photos that show passion for these beautiful cars, and for the brand." Panel member Teymur Madjderey, a photographer and blogger from Cologne, added: "I have to say I really appreciate the effort that has been put into Shooting Stars 2014. It was a great opportunity for all the Mercedes-Benz and car fans out there: to see your work published in an international car manufacturer’s widely published calendar. Stuff like this rarely happens." Alongside the technical aspects of the photographs, the uniqueness of the images played a decisive role in the selection process.
First, scenes for the calendar were submitted and rated by the internet community. Fans of Mercedes-Benz classics were asked to use an app to post their favourite pictures to the Mercedes-Benz Museum Facebook page . Following the online voting, renowned automobile photographers and experts from Mercedes-Benz Classic selected the finest examples. Each of the twelve winners enjoys a prize of 1000 euros.
The calendar "Shooting Stars! – Photography from Fans, for Fans“ (landscape format, 59 x 42 cm) is available online at and in the museum shop priced at 29.90 euros.
