Global Powertrain Trucks
Global Powertrain stands not only for integrated powertrains, but also for the integration of all global locations and relevant functions along the value chain. The unit manufactures innovative and reliable drive system components according to globally uniform quality standards. Global Powertrain is responsible for all drive technologies: the conventional and the electric powertrain – i.e. battery-electric and hydrogen-based fuel-cell drives. Thus, the division bundles Daimler Truck AG's entire powertrain know-how and offers customers flexible solutions from a single source.
The components are used by all of Daimler Truck AG´s commercial vehicle divisions and brands as well as by external customers. At around 50 percent, powertrains account for the lion’s share of a truck’s value added and thus make a major contribution to the growth and financial success of Daimler Truck AG . Intelligent platforms and the close cooperation within a global network can generate synergy effects for the company and its customers. With the ePowertrain, the division also relies on a global platform architecture in the field of electric trucks and buses. The ePowertrain plays a fundamental role regarding the company's ambition to offer only new vehicles that are CO2-neutral in driving operation (“from tank to wheel”) in Europe, North America and Japan by 2039.
Heavy-Duty Engine Platform (HDEP):
The heavy-duty engine generation covers the heavy-duty segment from 10.7 to 15.6 l and from 240 to 460 kW (Off-Highway to 480 kW). This generation of engines is used worldwide in heavy-duty trucks from Mercedes-Benz, Freightliner, Western Star, and FUSO, in touring coaches from Setra and Mercedes-Benz, and in off-highway products. The cleanest and most modern engine platform in its segment fulfills the tough emissions standards in force in Europe, North America, and Japan, and shows that it is possible to achieve Euro VI compliance and higher fuel efficiency at the same time. Current example is the latest generation of the OM 470, which consumes up to three percent less fuel than its predecessors, despite having a higher torque and more dynamic handling. The latest generation of the HDEP family is available throughout the triad. Additional highlights include the OM 473, which, as the most powerful engine in its range (460 kW), can efficiently and reliably move heavy loads.
Medium-Duty Engine Generation (MDEG):
Daimler Truck offers with the Medium-Duty Engine Generation an engine series for light and medium-duty trucks, urban and inter-city buses, and off-highway applications. The engines of the OM 93x series (four or six cylinders and either 5.1 l or 7.7 l of displacement) cover the performance range from 115 to 280 kW and set benchmarks in their class, thanks to their good cost-effectiveness and state-of-the-art technology. As a result of the global rollout, the DD5 medium-duty engine and the 6-cylinder variant DD8 are available in the U.S. market. Both engines fulfill the NAFTA greenhouse gas emissions standard (GHG17) and are produced locally in Detroit.
Classic engine series:
Global Powertrain also offers customers a range of high-quality medium-duty and heavy-duty engines outside the triad markets. Customers in countries such as Brazil, India, and Russia benefit from the outstanding combination of robustness, low procurement costs, and high fuel efficiency provided by the four and six-cylinder 900 series engines and the six-cylinder 457 and 460 series.
The integrated powertrain stands for engine systems, transmissions and axles designed for efficiency right from the start, perfectly coordinated in the test phase and produced in our own powertrain plants according to the highest quality standards. In Europe, for example, Mercedes-Benz Trucks offers an optimally coordinated powertrain in the medium and heavy segment, which stands for the highest fuel efficiency and maximum economy. Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) also offers a fully integrated powertrain in the heavy segment with the DD15 and DD13 engines, the DT12 transmission and the Detroit axles. The New Final Drive axle completes the second generation of the integrated powertrain from the Daimler Truck AG and gives us an innovative edge in axle technology through its outstanding overall efficiency. In the Actros, adjustments to the OM 470 engine and drive line reduce fuel consumption by up to five percent. The new NFD axle cuts the fuel consumption of the Actros by an additional 0.5 percent. In combination with an integrated powertrain, the axle increases overall efficiency by up to 6.5 percent in comparison with its predecessor.
Global Powertrain also offers engines, transmissions and axles to external customers as either individual components or complete powertrain solutions. In addition to products that are optimally adapted to customer and market-specific requirements, customers from the on-highway and off-highway segments benefit from our global aftersales network. Since May 2018, transmissions of HDEP/MDEG platforms fulfill Stage V EU regulation.
With its vehicles, Daimler Truck AG aims to contribute to the CO2-neutral transport of the future. Battery power will be rather used for lower cargo weights and for shorter distances. Fuel-cell power will tend to be the preferred option for heavier loads and longer distances. This combination enables Daimler Truck AG to offer its customers the best vehicle options, depending on the application.
In the medium and heavy-duty segment, the company relies on a global platform architecture for CO2-neutral drives as well: the ePowertrain. In a first step, the technological heart of the ePowertrain is an e-axle with integrated e-motors including transmission – based on the so-called eCarrier concept. Two highly efficient integrated e-motors lead to a steady performance with a high torque. The compact design results in a larger installation space for the battery and therefore allows for a higher range. The recuperation potential increases due to the combination of a large battery with very powerful e-motors. The low center of gravity also improves driving dynamics and cornering.
Thanks to the modular concept and the high adoption rates of components from the conventional powertrain, the Daimler Truck AG can specifically adapt the ePowertrain to different markets, segments or vehicle types and offers its customers accustomed excellent quality. The modularity of the concept can, for example, be recognized by the fact that it is designed to be compatible for one or two integrated e-motors. The global development network enables maximum technology transfer at competitive development and production costs.
The first version of the ePowertrain will celebrate its premiere in the series version of the Mercedes-Benz eActros in 2021. With start of the series production in 2022, the Mercedes-Benz eEconic will also benefit from the global ePowertrain. Future US-versions of the ePowertrain will be available in the North American market in the Freightliner vehicles eCascadia and eM2 as well.
In September 2020, Daimler Truck AG celebrated the world premiere of the fuel-cell concept truck Mercedes-Benz GenH2 Truck. It is conceptualized with liquid hydrogen for flexible and demanding long-distance haulage operations with ranges of up to 1,000 kilometers and more on a single tank of hydrogen with its series version. Daimler Truck AG plans to begin customer trials of the GenH2 Truck in 2023; series production is to start in the second half of the decade.
