The Freightliner Inspiration Truck with Highway Pilot system is the world's first autonomous truck to be granted a license for road use in the State of Nevada. The new product of Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) receives an outstanding response in the market: Since the start of production of the Freightliner Cascadia Evolution in March 2013, Daimler’s U.S. commercial vehicle subsidiary has posted a positive order balance of more than 15,000 heavy-duty trucks in the NAFTA region. DTNA grew its market share in this weight class (NAFTA Class 8) by 6.3% to 38.1% in the first half of 2013 (compared to 2012: 31.8%).

The delivery of the 1,000th Freightliner natural gas vehicle underlines the acceptance of green technologies by customers of Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) and makes the company the first commercial vehicle manufacturer to achieve such a milestone for clean, natural gas trucks in North America. To date, DTNA has handed over a combined total of 3,600 natural gas vehicles to customers. The vehicles come from various DTNA brands, including Freightliner and the school bus manufacturer Thomas Built Buses.

The customer is the American company Forestry Equipment of Virginia (FEVA), which specializes in equipping vehicles for use in the forestry sector and is the only manufacturer in the U.S. offering complete vehicles for use in this sector. FEVA equips the trucks for use in the forestry sector and thus takes over the final production phase of the truck assembly.

Last week, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced that Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) will participate in the Clean Cities program for the production and sale of more than 600 trucks equipped with hybrid and natural-gas drive systems. DTNA will participate in at least seven program awards representing $32.9 million (approx. €23 million) in funding to be applied toward the purchase and support of 638 hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles by several leading national fleet operators.

Together with Eaton Corp., Daimler Trucks North America has developed the first hybrid truck for use in hazardous material transport. The truck in question is a Freightliner Business Class M2e equipped with a hybrid electric drivetrain system. It was developed for Pennington Gas Service, which specializes in delivering propane gas primarily to customers in Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana. It marks the first time a Freightliner hybrid truck will be used for a hazardous material delivery application.

Daimler Trucks North America showcased the innovative "Predictive Cruise Control (PCC)" system in the "Freightliner New Innovation Truck" study at the Mid-America Trucking Show (MATS). This assistance system using map and satellite-based route previews is a world premiere for the automotive industry, and was developed jointly by engineers from Daimler Research in Stuttgart and Portland. The PCC system saves substantial amounts of fuel.

Last year, Daimler Trucks successfully defended its position as the world market leader in its sector by recording unit sales of 472,100 trucks, a one percent increase from 2007. Revenues rose by €106 million to €28.6 billion. Sales, revenues, and earnings at the division were headed for new records over the first nine months of 2008, before the global financial and economic crisis led to a decline in incoming orders from around the world in the fourth quarter.

Today marks the opening of the new manufacturing plant of Daimler Trucks North America LLC (DTNA) in Saltillo, Coahuila, in northern Mexico. The President of Mexico, Felipe Calderón, was on hand for the opening ceremony. The facility, which was built with an investment of $300 million, is expected to create 1,400 direct jobs and 200 indirect ones. In addition, it will generate 1,100 jobs within the local supplier industry. After breaking ground in January 2007, the facility was completed on time and within the planned budget.
