  • Stuttgart, May 30, 2022 - The number 13 was a real lucky number for vehicle safety 50 years ago: Mercedes-Benz presented the Experimental Safety Vehicle, ESF 13 for short, at the “Transpo 72” trade fair in Washington D.C. on 31 May 1972.

  • Stuttgart, Sep 26, 2013 - On 29 September 1888, piano manufacturer William Steinway established the Daimler Motor Company on Long Island, New York. Thus began the history of Daimler in North America, 125 years ago – just two years after the birth of the automobile. The aim was to produce stationary and marine engines in the United States according to a patent owned by Gottlieb Daimler.
  • Stuttgart, Aug 28, 2013 - The IAA International Motor Show in Frankfurt on the Main is one of the most important venues for outstanding world premières from Mercedes-Benz. In September 1963, the Mercedes-Benz 600 (W 100) opened the door to a new dimension in motoring: the representational vehicle set benchmarks with regard to technical features, safety, comfort, size, and power.
  • Stuttgart, Feb 7, 2013 - Exports of automobiles began in 1888: as Carl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler expanded into foreign markets, which accounted for the lion’s share of sales of their products, they laid the foundation for a global success story. At the time, they were still competitors: they both invented the motor car independently of each other in 1886.
  • Stuttgart, Oct 19, 2012 - The Corporate Chronicle of Daimler AG is to receive a further award: at the award ceremony for the German Design Award 2013, due to take place on 15 February 2013 in the German city of Frankfurt am Main, this definitive work will be honoured with a “Special Mention for outstanding quality of design”. A jury made up of 30 design experts evaluated some 1500 submissions before determining who should win this coveted prize.
  • Stuttgart, Aug 6, 2012 - 25 years ago Mercedes-Benz was the first automobile manufacturer in the world to introduce the front passenger airbag in a series-production car. The technology debuted in the S-Class (model series 126) at the Frankfurt International Motor Show in September 1987. It elevated the safety standards in Mercedes-Benz passenger cars to a new level and thus represented yet another logical step by the pioneer in passive vehicle safety in a long line of outstanding innovations.
  • Stuttgart, Nov 10, 2011 - Building on our heritage, and innovation builds on tradition. Mercedes-Benz Classic embraces these values in a very special way through its Archives and Collection department. The archive, one of the largest business archives anywhere in Europe and undoubtedly the most complete in the automotive industry, provides a documentary record of the outstanding history of the company, its products and ideas dating back to the invention of the automobile in 1886. Its contents are testimony to the ability to develop visionary designs, and document a varied economic and social history.
  • Stuttgart, Aug 31, 2011 - The history of Daimler AG goes back to 1886 – the year Carl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler invented the automobile independently of one another. Benz invented the Patent Motor Car in Mannheim,, while Daimler in Stuttgart invented the Daimler Motorised Carriage. They each founded their companies, Benz & Cie. and Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG), and in competition rose to become two leading automotive manufacturers.
  • Stuttgart, Jun 7, 2011 - In the year of the 125th anniversary of the automobile, an important gap has now been closed in the life story of Carl Benz, and therefore also in the corporate history of Daimler AG. The latest historical research suggests that the inventor of the automobile was born in a guesthouse at Rheinstrasse 22 in the Mühlburg district of Karlsruhe.
  • Stuttgart, Apr 12, 2011 - “The ultimate driving experience”, proclaimed the brochure on the first automatic transmission developed in-house by Mercedes-Benz back in 1961. Several years of intensive development work went into the four-speed automatic clutch which was premiered in April 1961 as an optional extra for the 220 SEb model of the 111 series. The automatic transmission even featured as standard in the Mercedes-Benz 300 SE which was presented in August 1961.
  • Stuttgart, Feb 7, 2011 - In 1981 Mercedes-Benz was the world’s first automobile manufacturer to present the airbag and belt tensioner as restraint systems to the public in a series-production car. These two milestones in passive safety were premiered in a W 126-series S-Class Saloon at the 1981 Geneva Motor Show. At Mercedes-Benz, this began the introduction of the modern airbag as a passive safety feature into the entire passenger car range, with the airbag and belt tensioner already becoming available as optional extras for all Mercedes-Benz cars in 1982.
  • Stuttgart, Dec 21, 2010 - The one company was looking for capital, and the other had an expansion of capacity in mind. And since both were located in the Baden region of Germany, it didn’t take long for them to come together – the Süddeutsche Automobilfabrik (SAG) in Gaggenau and the motor vehicle pioneers Benz & Cie. from Mannheim, who in 1907 signed a “consultancy agreement”.
  • Stuttgart/Rastatt, Jun 18, 2010 - It was an auspicious moment, when on18 July 1990 Werner Niefer, the then Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz AG, ceremonially broke the ground for a new assembly plant at Rastatt. This would be the company’s third passenger car production facility in Germany, after Sindelfingen and Bremen.
  • Stuttgart, May 11, 2010 - Apprenticeship training at the company is almost as old as the automobile itself. When Carl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler invented the automobile independently of one another in 1886, they created something that was new and revolutionary. When the demand for skilled workers increased sharply at the end of the nineteenth century, however, the obvious solution was for the company to train and nurture its own young recruits.

  • Stuttgart, Aug 20, 2009 - The first crash test in the history of Mercedes-Benz took place on 10 September 1959, when a test car was accelerated head-on towards a stationary obstacle. Safety research at the brand suddenly entered a new era.
  • Stuttgart, Jul 31, 2009 - Books about Daimler AG, its brands and its corporate predecessors are to be found in libraries worldwide – after all, the company can look back on a history spanning almost 125 years. Now important publications are also available in digital form on the Daimler Global Media site.
  • Stuttgart, Jul 11, 2009 - Daimler-Benz AG first presented the new six-cylinder Mercedes-Benz 220, 220 S and 220 SE models in the fashionable fintail design at a press event on 11 August 1959. These were the first production passenger cars to feature safety bodies – having both a passenger cell with maximum stability (“rigid passenger compartment”) and front and rear crumple zones.
  • Stuttgart/Hanover, Apr 20, 2009 - Staged in May 1949, the Technical Export Fair was to provide companies, in particular German companies, with a significant economic stimulus in the years and decades ahead. This was true also for Mercedes-Benz. The brand unveiled its two new passenger car models, the 170 D and 170 S, which heralded a sustainable development. The same Hanover fair also witnessed the premiere of the 300 engine series in the L 3250 truck and O 3250 bus, a unit that would continue to serve in light and medium-duty trucks for almost half a century.
  • Stuttgart/Mannheim, Apr 1, 2009 - On May 1, 1924, the boards of management of Benz & Cie., Mannheim, and Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG), Stuttgart, approved the foundation of a community of interests. In this way, the two oldest motor manufacturers became involved in each other’s fate and joined forces in economically difficult times – also in the interest of the motor vehicle.
  • Stuttgart/Kassel, Apr 1, 2009 - Today the Kassel plant employs some 3000 staff, with a product range that includes axles for all kinds of commercial vehicles. Kassel is Europe's largest axle plant. Yet this specialisation is a fairly recent phenomenon. Moreover, the history of the plant – due to celebrate its 200th anniversary next year – could hardly be more colourful.
  • Stuttgart/Geneva, Mar 3, 2009 - On 3 March 2009, Prof. Dr.-Ing. e.h. Dipl.-Ing. Werner Breitschwerdt will be inducted into the European Automotive Hall of Fame. The ceremony coincides with the Geneva Motor Show and Professor Breitschwerdt will accept this honour in person.
  • Stuttgart, Feb 25, 2009 - Trucks and cars differ fundamentally in many ways. They are so different that it is completely natural today to manufacture them in separate facilities and not in one common plant. This strict separation exists at Daimler AG since 1978.
  • Stuttgart, Feb 15, 2009 - Daimler-Benz presented its dynamic handling control FDR, a system jointly developed with Bosch in Arjeplog in Sweden in mid March 1994. It had its market launch a year later under the name Electronic Stability Programme ESP® and represented a further milestone in the field of active safety.
  • Stuttgart, Jan 23, 2009 - On 23 January 1951, Daimler-Benz AG applied for patent number DBP 854 157, using the unadorned description of "Motor vehicles especially for the transportation of people". Behind this was concealed no less than the invention of the crumple zone. A patent which in the following decades revolutionised the entire automotive industry.
  • Mannheim/Paris, Jan 13, 2009 - In 1886, working independently of one another, Carl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler invented the automobile. But it would be another two years before the two men achieved the first breakthrough with this revolutionary product, thanks to crucial support from two women: Bertha Benz and Louise Sarazin.
  • Stuttgart, Dec 2, 2008 - The invention of the automobile in 1886 revolutionised individual mobility. At the same time, the product was so unique that the manufacturers fundamentally had to change the distribution channels customary up until then.
  • Stuttgart/Mannheim, Sep 15, 2008 - The Mannheim location of Daimler AG is celebrating a double anniversary in 2008: in 1883, i.e. 125 years ago, Carl Benz founded Benz & Cie., Rheinische Gasmotoren-Fabrik, which eventually opened a new factory in Mannheim-Waldhof in 1908 – 100 years ago.
  • Stuttgart, Jul 20, 2008 - The Mercedes-Benz plant in Untertürkheim is one of the oldest industrial manufacturing sites in the world, and since 1998 has housed a future-oriented production facility for ultra-modern Mercedes-Benz in-line engines.
  • Stuttgart, Jul 1, 2008 - In August 1978 Mercedes-Benz presented the second-generation anti-lock braking system (ABS), developed together with Bosch, to the press in Untertürkheim. The world-first enables a driver to retain steering control even during emergency braking. From December the innovation became available, initially in the S-Class sedans (116 series).
