Nürburgring. On-track action for the 48th running of the ADAC TOTAL 24h-Rennen at the Nürburgring has started. On Thursday around lunchtime, the teams with the Mercedes-AMG GT cars completed first qualifying. The session, replacing free practice for this year, was all about familiarising and finding the right set-up. Driving the #4 Mercedes-AMG Team HRT entry, Maro Engel posted the third-fastest time in the field of around 100 cars. In total, three of the seven Mercedes-AMG GT3s were classified in the top ten. Top Qualifying 2 on Friday evening will determine the starting grid positions. So far, all three Mercedes-AMG GT3s of the GetSpeed Performance team (#8, #9, #10) have already secured their slots for this session. The cars run by HRT (#2, #4, #6) and 10Q Racing Team (#22) can still do so in the preceding Top Qualifying 1 session.

Without the traditional colourful prelude during the Adenauer Racing Day, on-track action started straight away for the reduced field of participants in this year’s 24-hour race. In first qualifying, scheduled on Thursday at lunchtime to replace free practice, the teams with the Mercedes-AMG GT3 and the Mercedes-AMG GT4 presented themselves in good shape. On a fully dry track, with little traffic and almost no incidents during the 90-minute session, drivers had excellent conditions to find their way at the circa 25 kilometres long combination of the Grand Prix track and the Nordschleife.

Even though the lap times don’t give a real indication for the race yet, some drivers caught the attention with fast laps. For instance, Maro Engel posted the third-fastest time overall in 8m 17.523s with the #4 Mercedes-AMG Team HRT car and ended up as the best-placed GT3 from Affalterbach. Another driver to go fast was Daniel Juncadella (ESP), whose time of 8m 20.417s saw the #22 Mercedes-AMG GT3 of the 10Q Racing Team classified seventh. Yelmer Buurman (NED) put the #2 Mercedes-AMG Team HRT in ninth place with 8m 21.025s, making it three Mercedes-AMG GT3s in the top ten.

The next activity for the Performance and Customer Racing Teams will follow later today during second qualifying in the dark: the session will get underway at 20.30 and is to end at 23.30. On Friday, another qualifying session has been scheduled while the hotly-contested Top Qualifying is to follow in the early evening hours. These two shootout sessions will determine the starting grid positions for the 24-hour race that will start on Saturday. As the organiser confirmed in the morning, three Mercedes-AMG GT3s are already certain of their participation in Top Qualifying 2 based on their achievements in the Nürburgring Endurance Series: the #9 Mercedes-AMG Team GetSpeed entry and the team’s two additional Customer Racing cars (#8 and #10). The three HRT Mercedes-AMG GT3s and the further GT3 run by 10Q Racing Team have been confirmed as participants in Top Qualifying 1, in which they can still secure a slot for the 17-car field in Top Qualifying 2.

Maro Engel, Mercedes-AMG Team HRT #4: “That was a good start of the weekend. The car handles really well. Conditions were excellent: it was dry, relatively cool and there was little traffic. Now, we want to continue to prepare ourselves in a god way. I am curious about the next session in the dark. We want to improve continuously and surely, we will only know where we really are in Top Qualifying on Friday.”

Yelmer Buurman, Mercedes-AMG Team HRT #2: “My impression after first qualifying is very positive. The handling of the car is really mega. The track was in top condition, too. A very good start of the weekend, I would say. The balance of the car was right from the outset. We didn’t do that many laps, but we are all very confident as far as the weekend is concerned.”

Fabian Schiller, Mercedes-AMG Team GetSpeed #9: “The car was running really well. Primarily, however, it wasn’t all about performance for us. For the first session, we mainly wanted to make sure that every driver got a turn in the car so that everybody already has completed his two mandatory laps. Apart from that, we looked at the conditions at the track, but we will do the further set-up work during the next qualifying sessions.”

Daniel Juncadella, 10Q Racing Team #22: “That was a smooth start of the weekend. Being back in the car is a great feeling. First of all, we concentrated on making sure that everything is working well and that we get a few laps with our new car under our belt. Now, we will prepare for the stints in the dark during the night session. That will surely be a massive delight!”

Racing for a good cause

The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation and the entire Laureus initiative, jointly founded by Daimler AG and Richemont in 2000, are celebrating their 20th anniversary. As a partner of many years of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, Mercedes-AMG is congratulating with a special activation for the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring: the Customer Racing Team 10Q Racing Team with starting number 10 will be running a Mercedes-AMG GT3 with ’20 years of Laureus’ livery. The activation reflects the passion for motorsport that has been supporting Laureus by means of the ‘Passion for Good’ initiative since 2017. In 2020, the Mercedes-AMG Performance Teams will again be raising money with 1 Euro for each kilometre completed to support the sporting programmes of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation and, above all, the children and youngsters. Since the start of the ‘Passion for Good’ initiative, over 180,000 Euros were already raised in this way for the foundation.
