The superstar among the star-branded special-purpose vehicles appearing at this year's world-leading Ifat Entsorga trade show is the new Actros: the latest-generation truck which sets technological standards and boasts even better levels of performance, economy and ride comfort.
After around 2600 hours in the wind tunnel, intensive tests in extreme heat and cold and also countless hours of computer work, the developers at Mercedes-Benz have created a vehicle which appeals to its users with a whole host of technical highlights and an attractive design. The new Actros is also being increasingly deployed in the municipal services sector, a fact confirmed by the initial customers who are already making full use of what the new model has to offer.
One of the highlights of the trendsetting truck model has to be the new inline six-cylinder engine. With a power output range of from 310 kW (421 hp) to 375 kW (510 hp) and maximum torque of 2500 Nm at 1100 rpm in the currently most powerful version, the new Actros boasts high torque levels but low consumption levels thanks to its efficient common rail injection system.
To comply with the Euro 6 emissions standard, the SCR technology is combined with AdBlue injection, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and a particulate filter. Its fully-automatic 12-speed transmission with PowerShift shift mechanism has been optimised for quick, smooth gear changes and features Standard, Economy and Power transmission modes. Also new is an integrated crawl function.
When it comes to the chassis, the new Actros impresses with a standard-fit air-sprung rear axle, a new suspension mounting and more direct steering. As a result the Actros handles even better and is more comfortable than its predecessor. The new Actros is available in 4x2 and 6x2 variants, with wheelbases ranging from 3350 mm to 6000 mm and three different frame heights.
Numerous assistance systems help to support the driver of the new Actros in his job. Lane Keeping Assist, Proximity Control Assist and an advanced emergency braking system as well as standard ESP also help to enhance safety on the road.
An enviable workplace
But it is not just on account of its attractive external design and cab sculpted in the wind tunnel that the new Actros scores highly with fleet operators and drivers.
Each of the seven available cab variants help turn the space behind the steering wheel into an enviable workplace. The cabs have been functionally designed to meet every requirement and - depending on width and height - have appropriate names: ClassicSpace, StreamSpace, BigSpace or GigaSpace.
A newly designed driver's seat, multifunction steering wheel, on-board computer and standard FleetBoard telematics system enhance the sense of comfort and safety. A convenient touch is the new access key which allows a range of other useful functions to be called up besides just opening and closing the vehicle - including checking the fuel level or the tyre pressure.
Actros 2545 L with Palfinger roll-off container system
At Ifat Entsorga 2012 Mercedes-Benz is displaying the new Actros 2545 L 6x2 with hook attachment from Palfinger.
The base vehicle has a Euro 5 engine producing 330 kW (449 hp) and 2200 Nm, comes as a 26.0 t weight variant and has an axle load distribution of 8.0/11.5/7.5 t.
Safety is taken care of thanks to EPB with ABS and ASR, and the ClassicSpace cab features a number of functional appointments. When it comes to work the driver can enjoy the comfort of an ergonomic suspension seat, while for rest breaks there is also a deluxe bed. A 630-litre fuel tank and a 60-litre AdBlue tank help to ensure a good range and environmentally acceptable consumption levels.
The telescopic roll-off container system from Palfinger boasts a lifting force of 20.0 t and is suitable for use with containers complying with DIN standard 30722 Part 1. Its welded construction made from high-quality special steel helps to guarantee a high load capacity, maximum stability and a long service life.
Used in municipal applications, the body has a hydraulically extending telescopic hook arm, a pivoting frame with two contact rollers with large angled centring elements, a two-stage electric internal control mechanism and a fast-feed mode for high operating speed. The design and function of the TÜV-approved Palift roll-off container system have been specifically matched to the chassis and cab.
Actros 2545 L with Meiller-Kipper roll-off tipper
The diversity of potential municipal applications is also being demonstrated by the two Mercedes-Benz Actros models on display in the demonstration areas at Ifat Entsorga.
Munich-based tipper specialist Meiller has fitted an RK 20.70 roll-off tipper to an Actros 2545 L 6x2, with 2.5 m-wide flat-roof cab. The four-axle chassis with liftable trailing axle is designed for rig operation with duomatic coupling and trailer connections offset to the left, and has leaf spring suspension at the front and air suspension on the two rear axles.
The fitted Meiller hook attachment is suitable for use with containers meeting DIN standard 30722 with a container length of from 5500 to 7000 mm (shortest transportable container is 4750 mm; shortest tipper container is 5250 mm). The body is fitted with a control unit with load-dependent fast-feed mode including speed control. The first joint section of the telescopic tipper frame features a twin-arm design. Both ends are connected via a shaft. The second joint section guides the extending boom.
Actros 2532 L with HN Schörling side loader
An Actros 2532 L 6x2 with body from HN Schörling, designed as a waste collection vehicle, is also being displayed at the international environmental trade show. The base vehicle built at the Wörth plant is the 26 t weight variant powered by a BlueTec 5 engine producing 235 kW (320 hp).
The HS Speedline Fix side loader is popular with both the municipal services and private disposal management sectors thanks to its maximum efficiency. Featuring a robust design, high load capacities and individual equipment options, the system enjoys widespread success. The body with a load capacity of 10,500 kg comprises a low-maintenance, low-wear compactor in the form of a hinged compressor, and also has a fully-automatic side-loading waste bin dumping device. Thanks to highly-efficient telescopic dumping with fully-automatic loading, the Speedline side loader is suitable for one-man operation.
The equipment highlights available for the body include a colour camera system, LED work lamps and a lubrication system for both the body and chassis.
