The new smart fortwo meets high safety standards, some of which far exceed legal requirements. This was demonstrated by a recent in-house offset crash against a Mercedes-Benz S-Class. As the smaller and lighter vehicle in the collision and at an impact speed of 50 km/h with 50 percent overlap, the smart offers its two passengers an intact occupant space and excellent chances of survival.

Next milestone in the plant history: the smart Hambach plant produced the 1.5 millionth smart fortwo. The milestone vehicle, a white smart forwo electric drive cabrio, rolled off the production line before the beginning of the extended summer break: production will be paused for almost two months in July and August, as massive efforts are being taken to prepare the plant optimally for future production requirements with the renewal of large parts of the production installations.

According to registration figures from the German Federal Office for Motor Vehicles the fleet average of all new smart vehicles registered in 2012 was 96.9 grams CO2 per kilometre – a reduction of 2.5 percent compared with 2011. This means that the brand leads by a large margin.

For model year 2010 the smart fortwo cdi has been given a clear power boost, yet it remains just as economical and environmentally friendly as before. In future the state-of-the-art three-cylinder diesel engine will produce 21 percent more power and deliver approximately 18 percent more maximum torque. This is the conclusion reached by experts from the prestigious market observer EurotaxSchwacke after analysing 16 vehicles in the mini car class. They confirm previous cost calculations by numerous trade magazines and the ADAC, Germany's largest automobile club. Owners of a smart fortwo mhd save around €1,700 in running costs compared with the most expensive model in this class.

From October 2008 the standard equipment of the 45 kW/61 bhp and 52 kW/71 bhp petrol-engined smart fortwo models will include micro hybrid drive (mhd) technology with a user-friendly automatic start-stop system. This reduces the NEDC consumption of the two naturally aspirated engines by an average of 8 percent. In city traffic fuel savings of almost 20 percent are even possible. Furthermore, from the autumn of 2008 the smart fortwo cdi will be equipped with a closed diesel particulate filter that almost completely eradicates particulate emissions.

With the development of the world's smallest direct-injection diesel engine, smart has produced a masterpiece of engine development that earns the new smart fortwo cdi the distinction of the world's most economical production car with combustion drive. The 33 kW/45 bhp two-door car consumes just 3.3 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres (NEDC), which means that it can travel approximately 1000 kilometres without refuelling. Emitting just 88 grams of CO2 per kilometre, the smart fortwo diesel is the world champion in low CO2 emissions.

From 15 October 2007 a particularly economical 52 kW variant of the smart fortwo with a start/stop function will roll off the production line in Hambach: the smart fortwo micro hybrid drive. From the end of the year it will be available as a coupé and a cabrio in all three lines – pure, pulse and passion. In addition, a limited special series that will offer an attractive price saving is planned to mark the market launch. The micro-hybrid variant will be available as a left-hand-drive ECE version in Germany and all other markets.
