Stuttgart. The WE ARE PART OF CULTURE travelling exhibition, WAPOC for short, promotes social diversity, respect and acceptance. It presents well-known lesbian, gay, bi, trans and intersexual figures from European cultural history as examples and role models. WAPOC can be viewed from 9 October 2020 to 1 November 2020 on the CAMPUS on Level 0 at the Mercedes-Benz Museum. Visiting the exhibition during opening hours of the Museum is free of charge.

The figures presented include racing driver Roberta Cowell, King Charles I of Württemberg and King Frederick the Great of Prussia, writers Simone de Beauvoir and Selma Lagerlöf, British mathematician Alan Turing, actor Greta Garbo and singer Freddie Mercury. Alongside their social significance, all of them are connected by the fact that they were “queer”. The portraits of the protagonists of the exhibition were made by many notable artists such as Anne Bengard (Berlin), Gerda Laufenberg (Cologne), Ralf König (Cologne) and Robert W. Richards (New York). Be it ink, acrylic, stencil, drawing, cartoon or illustration: the artistic techniques are as varied the celebrities that are represented. The artworks are displayed as barrier-free banner pillars.

The diversity exhibition WE ARE PART OF CULTURE was supported from 2017 to 2019 by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth as part of the “Demokratie leben!” (Live democracy!) programme and by the Federal Agency for Civic Education. WAPOC already visited Stuttgart Central Station in 2018 and received a very positive response there. The 100 % HUMAN project from Stuttgart and the department for equal opportunities for men and women of the city of Stuttgart have made it possible for the exhibition to be shown at various locations in the Capital of Baden-Württemberg until the end of 2021. As a result, WAPOC is being specially expanded with portraits of famous personages from Stuttgart created by local artists. The guest appearance at the Mercedes-Benz Museum is furthermore being supported by the Global Diversity Office of DAIMLER AG.
