Mercedes-Benz Vans presents its Vision URBANETIC, a revolutionary mobility concept that goes way beyond existing ideas on autonomous vehicles. Vision URBANETIC eliminates the separation between people moving and goods transport. It enables on-demand, sustainable and efficient movement of people and goods – and applies an innovative approach to fulfil the needs of cities, businesses from diverse sectors as well as city dwellers and travellers. The concept reduces traffic flows, relieves inner-city infrastructures and contributes to an improved quality of urban life.
Part of this vision will become a reality in the not too distant future: Mercedes-Benz Vans plans a new, autonomously driving van model range for passenger transportation. In addition to that, Mercedes-Benz Vans intensifies the cooperation with BASF regarding mobility topics. Together, the two companies want to cooperate in the areas of electric mobility, digitalization and autonomous driving. Among other things, BASF recently introduced an on-demand ridesharing system at the Ludwigshafen site following the example of ViaVan, a joint venture of Mercedes-Benz Vans and the US-American start-up Via. Further projects are to follow in the upcoming years, among others a pilot project regarding autonomous passenger transportation on the factory grounds.
Vision URBANETIC: innovative solutions for urban challenges
The mobility concept Vision URBANETIC presented at the IAA Commercial Vehicles takes up the urban challenges of the future and provides innovative solutions for these. The visionary concept is based on an autonomously driving, electrically driven chassis which can carry different swap bodies for passenger transportation or freight transport. As a ride-sharing vehicle, Vision URBANETIC can accommodate up to twelve passengers, while the cargo module can carry up to ten EPAL pallets. A load space 3.70 metres long fits into a total vehicle length of 5.14 metres. Plus, the concept incorporates an IT infrastructure that analyses in real time the supply and demand within a defined area. The result is a self-driving fleet, with routes planned flexibly and efficiently on the basis of current transportation needs. All of this makes Vision URBANETIC a groundbreaking concept for future urban mobility.
Thanks to full networking, the evaluation of local information – such as concerts and events – and intelligent control, the system not only analyses current needs, it can also learn from them. It is thus able to anticipate and react to future needs. This can optimise processes and help shorten waiting and delivery times and avoid traffic jams. For instance, the overall system can use the data captured by the vehicle control centre – which collates and analyses needs – to identify a crowd of people gathering in a certain area. It can send vehicles there to quickly and efficiently satisfy the increased demand. The system can thus react flexibly and is not based on rigid routes or fixed timetables.
Fully networked and part of a comprehensive ecosystem
Mercedes-Benz Vans is pursuing an ambitious target with its Vision URBANETIC. It envisages transporting more people and goods with fewer vehicles on a virtually unchanged roads infrastructure in order to relieve inner cities and, at the same time, fulfil continually growing mobility requirements and customer desires. This would ultimately facilitate an improved quality of urban life – with flexible and comfortable movement of people, efficient and sustainable transportation of goods, significantly lower noise and pollutant emissions and greater freedom in city planning.
As a fully networked vehicle, Vision URBANETIC is part of an ecosystem in which commercial and private mobility wishes are transmitted digitally. Vision URBANETIC collates these needs and fulfils them with a highly flexible fleet, facilitating a considerable improvement in the use of resources.
Two interchangeable modules for people and goods
To achieve this level of flexibility, Vision URBANETIC is equipped with different interchangeable bodies depending on purpose of use. As a ride-sharing vehicle with a people-mover body, Vision URBANETIC offers space for up to twelve passengers. The modules are switched either automatically or manually, with the automated process taking just a few minutes. The system is based on an autonomous driving platform onto which the respective bodies are fixed. It incorporates all the driving functions, meaning the autonomous chassis can also make its way to its next job location without a body attached. Absolute safety is guaranteed by redundant components for all relevant actions such as steering, braking and acceleration.
The cargo module serves as a classic goods transporter. Thanks to its variable load floor, it can be divided into two levels and transport up to ten EPAL palettes. The load space has a volume of 10 m3. Alternatively, the vehicle can be fitted with fully automated cargo-space systems and used as a mobile package station for last-mile deliveries. Multiple further use cases are also conceivable as the concept can be equipped with a wide array of bodies for other sectors and applications.
Greater freedom for interior design
Thanks to fully automated driverless operation, operating costs fall significantly with Vision URBANETIC. Plus, with the exception of charging times for the battery-electric drive and maintenance periods, each vehicle can be in use around the clock, 365 days a year. It means, for example, profitable operation of local public transport solutions which would not be commercially viable with a driver. Likewise, the concept provides an answer to an ever-increasing demand in areas such as the logistics sector – a lack of drivers. Companies are already finding it extremely difficult or impossible to fill vacancies. In light of this, a German trade magazine voted “Fahrermangel” (lack of drivers) the 2017 Logistics Word of the Year.
The absence of a driver’s cab also frees up space for interior design. Steering wheel, pedals, dashboard and the entire cockpit are things of the past. The space can instead be used for additional passengers or a higher goods volume.
On a factory site or roaming freely in the city
The system architecture of the autonomous Vision URBANETIC ensures continual route adaptation using real-time traffic information. The operator’s fleet management is also part of the IT system, with usage conceivable in restricted areas such as a factory site or airport as well as in road traffic.
Vision URBANETIC’s electric drive delivers zero-local-emissions mobility, thus making it the perfect vehicle for city centres and areas subject to legal access restrictions. The virtually noiseless electric drive also presents new options for late or night-time deliveries and thus offers major commercial potential.
Establish trust through active communication with the outside world
Many people still view autonomous vehicles with the certain degree of scepticism. To address this, Vision URBANETIC adopts a new approach, particularly with its people-mover body. The vehicle uses multiple cameras and sensor systems to observe its surroundings in their entirety and communicates actively with them. It uses the large-format display on the front of the vehicle to inform pedestrians crossing the street in front of it that it has noticed them.
Another highlight is digital shadowing around the side door. Several hundred light units display the contours of approaching individuals along the flanks, signalling to them that the Vision URBANETIC has noticed them.
"Vans & Drones": Sprinter as a mobile drone base

As early as 2017, a Mercedes-Benz Vito was used as a safe landing platform for drones in the successful "Vans & Drones" pilot project in Zurich. At the German International Motor Show for Commercial Vehicles, the focus is now on the Sprinter. Mercedes-Benz Vans will be presenting the further development of the project along with other applications.
With "Vans & Drones", Mercedes-Benz Vans combines the benefits of a van with the advantages of a drone. This intermodal approach makes for improved efficiency of deliveries while opening up new business models. Unlike previous projects presented by drone logistics providers, the drone does not deliver parcels straight to the end customer, but takes care of the first part of the last mile, transporting shipments to a delivery vehicle. This also makes it possible to transport shipments back and forth between two vehicles. The drone reaches speeds of around 70 km/h and flies a direct route, allowing it to cover long distances in city traffic faster than a conventional delivery vehicle. As usual, the shipment is handed over to the recipient by a parcel delivery operative. No special infrastructure is required at the customer's end. This minimises effort and cost while improving safety, there being no need for direct interaction between end customer and drone. In addition, this model allows drone deliveries in densely populated urban environments.
New services with extremely short delivery times
The combination of van and drone enables delivery companies to react to changing customer requirements and to offer new services. For example, shipments can be delivered within a precisely defined time window and in a much shorter time. The ability to transport a shipment from one parcel delivery vehicle to another also opens up a new service dimension for the customer, who, thanks to the system, can flexibly change the delivery location until just before the planned delivery time. In this case, the shipment is transferred by drone from the original delivery vehicle to another vehicle closer to the new destination. In addition, shipments can be tracked transparently at all times. Use of the solution is also conceivable away from the courier, express and parcel delivery sector.
Mercedes-Benz Sprinter as a safe landing site
The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter offers many advantages when it comes to the integration of drones. Its height makes the roof a particularly safe take-off and landing site. A folding mechanism serves to open the drone platform. The driver can conveniently and safely take receipt of shipments from the drone below the platform, in addition to loading the aircraft with new shipments or returns. Also, the stowage space between roof and landing platform is large enough to transport two drones simultaneously over long distances in the van. This makes for more flexible route planning of the drones while providing more options as regards range.
Matternet M2 drone: 70 km/h, range of 20 kilometres
"Vans & Drones" employs drones from the US start-up Matternet. They offer a payload of two kilograms along with a range of up to 20 kilometres, depending on weather conditions. The system uses redundant sensors. For emergencies, the drone is equipped with a parachute. The parcels are packaged in special drone boxes. Such drones have been used commercially since 2017 in Switzerland, where they have shown high reliability with zero incidents.
The drones, which fly automatically along programmed routes, are controlled by GPS. The landing platform in the roof of the Sprinter sends an infra-red signal to the drone to enable automated landings with centimetre precision.

Efficient logistics is the key to success in many sectors. It is a decisive factor, especially for service technicians. Businesses with service fleets will benefit in future from a digital solution called In-Van Delivery & Return (IDR) from Mercedes-Benz Vans. This makes for greatly simplified logistics while giving service technicians more time, which can be used for productive work on the customer's premises.
At the 2018 German International Motor Show for Commercial Vehicles, Mercedes-Benz Vans will present IDR to a larger audience for the first time. The first customers are currently trialling the service, which will be available to other companies from 2019.
Safe delivery to the van. Speedy return of materials
Service technicians spend an average of around 90 minutes each day loading the right spare parts and tools for their jobs into the vehicle and unloading any unnecessary materials. The system developed by Mercedes-Benz Vans enables dispatchers and service technicians to easily delegate these activities to professional logistics companies, who deliver the required spare parts and tools overnight straight to the van, without a key, ready for the next day. Materials no longer needed are collected instead of building up in the cargo space. Overnight delivery and collection saves the service technician frequent trips to the home base. The time gained can be used for productive activities on the customer's premises.
Frequently, spare parts that are not absolutely necessary are kept in the vehicle as a precaution, so that repair or maintenance can be completed quickly and successfully on the first visit. IDR allows speedy returns as well as the job-specific return of warranty parts and spare parts that are not required. These can be sent straight back to the central warehouse after the job has been completed. This makes it possible to significantly reduce the stocks of materials carried by the service technician and at the home base.
Security and transparency for service technicians and dispatchers
The company's fleet manager can choose which service provider is granted access to each vehicle. In addition, the authorisation to open the rear doors can be restricted where necessary. Access is reliable and secure using a direct Bluetooth connection to the connectivity module in the vehicle, as a stable internet connection is not possible everywhere. The service technician and the dispatcher are notified whenever the doors are opened or closed by the logistics operative.
IDR also offers logistics companies greater security and efficiency
Besides the operators of service fleets and the technicians, IDR is also of benefit to logistics companies. There is no need to get hold of and administer a third key. The digital key is integrated in the driver's scanner, which means that no additional hardware is required. Also, GPS localisation dispenses with the need for lengthy searches should it not be possible for the van always to be parked in the same place.

Urbanisation, digitalisation, e-commerce boom: the courier, express and parcel delivery sector is posting impressive growth rates worldwide, with experts predicting further significant rises in volume and sales for the coming years. Yet this growth also poses a challenge to the sector. It is becoming increasingly difficult to efficiently manage the growing number of deliveries. Mercedes-Benz Vans supports its customers – with integrated solutions that combine many different technologies.
The solution presented at the German International Motor Show for Commercial Vehicles is based on the new Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, in which overall efficiency is significantly improved by two innovative technologies. The new generation of the van provides the ideal platform. Its extensive connectivity makes it perfect for the integration of innovative technologies.
CoROS: Artificial Intelligence for the cargo space - camera-based parcel tracking for a tidier cargo space
Newly developed, CoROS (Cargo Recognition and Organization System) actively supports parcel delivery drivers with camera-based object tracking and machine learning software. It makes for faster loading while shortening the time needed for sorting and searching while out on the delivery round.
A camera system in the cargo space automatically recognises and registers parcels using bar codes and symbols on the outside of the parcels. This is done in fractions of a second, no matter how the driver carries the parcel into the van – provided the code is briefly visible for the cameras. Manual, time-consuming scanning and sorting of each shipment is no longer necessary. Once a parcel is inside the vehicle, CoROS uses illuminated LEDs to indicate the optimal storage location in the cargo space. This is based, for example, on the seqence in which the parcels will be delivered.
The system also prevents incorrect loading of shipments. If CoROS detects that a parcel is intended for a different delivery round, it warns the driver immediately on entering the vehicle by means of audible and visual signals.
CoROS continuously monitors the positions of the parcels in the cargo space, from loading to unloading. This means that the system, driver and fleet manager know at all times where the parcels are, even if their position changes during the journey (e.g. due to sudden braking).
Once at the delivery destination, CoROS uses LEDs to tell the driver where the relevant parcels are in the cargo space, thereby reducing the necessary searching effort. Initial trials with customers in the USA and Europe show that the time required to load the vehicle can be reduced significantly, depending on the other processes used by the logistics service provider.
CoROS offers numerous additional benefits for dispatchers and logistics planners. Connectivity allows the data to be directly integrated into the corresponding logistics systems. The transmitted real-time information is visualised in an app and a web interface, not only making for improved transparency, but also enabling data-based process optimisation.
In addition, standardisation of the loading/unloading process considerably reduces the training required for new drivers, as the system guides the driver step-by-step through the optimal process.
Speed Delivery Door: fast and easy entry and exit
A parcel delivery driver gets in and out of their van around 300 to 350 times every day. Each time, they have to open and close the doors – while sometimes picking up and setting down heavy parcels more than once. This takes a lot of strength while also putting strain on the back and joints. To make life easier for parcel delivery drivers, therefore, Mercedes-Benz Vans has developed the automated sensor-controlled Speed Delivery Door.
The system consists of a quick-opening, sensor-controlled double swivelling door in the cargo space and special sensors for recognising the driver. As soon as the driver leaves their seat to enter the cargo space, the Speed Delivery Door automatically unlocks and opens. This saves time while making life easier for the driver, who now needs to pick up the parcels just once and can exit the vehicle without further manual operations or obstacles.
Once the driver has left the cargo space, the door automatically closes and locks. This can save up to ten seconds per stop. A delivery round involving 150 stops can save up to 25 minutes in total.
In addition to the automatic mode described, the door also offers a manual mode, in which the sensors are disabled and the door is opened or closed using a switch. This is useful if the driver needs to enter and exit several times in succession, e.g. to load a handcart.
The Speed Delivery Door also contributes to the driver's safety. Although it is not possible to look into the vehicle from outside, the door is transparent from inside to outside. This means that the driver can see the road or pavement before getting out. The risk of collision with passers-by is significantly reduced. Also, the driver gets out through the Speed Delivery Door on the co-driver's side and not into moving traffic on the driver's side.
The fact that the door is fully integrated into the vehicle's locking and security system also makes for increased protection against break-in and theft. As soon as the driver moves away from the vehicle, it automatically locks after just a few seconds. By pressing a button on the key, the driver can make the Speed Delivery Door automatically slide open again on their return. The Speed Delivery Door is currently undergoing extensive testing and will be optionally available for the new Mercedes-Benz Sprinter from next year.
VAN2SHARE: integrated van sharing solution with built-in driver/order management

With VAN2SHARE, Mercedes-Benz Vans presents an innovative, digital van sharing solution, which brings together drivers, vehicles and orders on a single platform. It also allows keyless access to the vehicle while offering extensive data analytics options for improved fleet management. The solution is aimed primarily at passenger transport operators, CEP services and car rental companies. VAN2SHARE opens up new business models for car rental companies, such as "Counterless rental". The solution also offers advantages for logistics service providers. For example, a logistics company can quickly and easily make the vehicles from its fleet available to subcontractors. The system has been trialled and improved in recent months in collaboration with initial customers.
Optimised staff planning and vehicle handover
The platform-based system enables dispatchers in the passenger-transport and CEP sector to quickly and easily distribute orders among drivers and assign vehicles to them. Once registered in the system, the driver can start work immediately. Using the smartphone app, they are directed to their vehicle and can unlock it. It is no longer necessary for the keys to be handed over, for example at a depot. In addition, the dispatcher always has total transparency across the entire fleet. They can check the status of the vehicles at any time while also making maintenance management much more efficient. GPS tracking allows vehicle use and the fleet's load factor to be analysed and optimised. This makes for improved efficiency. In addition, the dispatcher is able to react quickly to acute needs, such as suddenly received new orders.
Keyless access even without an active internet connection
Especially in rural areas, a stable internet connection cannot always be guaranteed. A mix of GSM and Bluetooth technology, therefore, enables vehicle access even without an active internet connection. This feature, which is of particular interest for courier, express and parcel services as well as car rental companies, opens up possibilities for the digital management of decentralised locations in a needs-based and flexible manner. This means that vehicles can be parked away from the company's own depot. Drivers or customers can pick them up in places that are particularly convenient for them.
VAN2SHARE works on the software-as-a-service principle. Thus, the software and necessary IT infrastructure are operated by Mercedes-Benz Vans, while the customer uses them as a service. The system is open. Customers can avail themselves of additional services, such as integrated claims management or automatic allocation of vehicles to drivers. Mercedes-Benz Vans will continuously expand the offer in the coming months. These additions will include an interface for integration into existing customer systems and further integration into the digital services of Mercedes PRO.
The solution can also be easily retrofitted in older vehicles. All that needs to be done is to install a hardware component to establish connectivity. This also allows fleets of new and older vehicles to be intelligently linked with VAN2SHARE.

In 2017, Mercedes-Benz Vans and US start-up Via set up a joint venture called ViaVan to establish on-demand ride sharing in Europe. ViaVan has been on the market in Amsterdam and London since early 2018. Together with Berliner Verkehrsgesellschaft (BVG), the young company recently launched "BerlKönig", an innovative ride sharing offer as an addition to local public transport.
The two partners have developed an integrated, needs-based mobility solution for the German capital. In addition to safety and comfort, some of the vehicles, which have been specially optimised for this application, offer passengers useful features such as charging options for smart devices. An intelligent algorithm analyses the transport needs in real time and deploys the available vehicles on that basis. This allows optimal utilisation of the fleet while guaranteeing high availability. Ride sharing lets more people be transported by the same number of vehicles. The traffic volume is reduced, while pressure is taken off the urban infrastructure and emissions are cut. The intelligent combination of ideal vehicles and sophisticated algorithms enables operators to offer their users needs-based services that are cost-effective for both sides.
Optimised for the city
The goal of ViaVan is to offer an alternative to the private car without any sacrifices in terms of comfort and everyday utility. Thanks to the flexible system, customers are no longer bound to fixed departure times and stopping points. This gives rise to a highly attractive car-based alternative to existing public transport. ViaVan works closely with public transport operators, cities and municipalities as well as private service providers, offering them flexible models from licensing through to full operation.
Greater comfort and utility value for the passenger
To offer passengers the most pleasant experience possible, Mercedes-Benz Vans is developing specific vehicle equipment options optimally tailored to ride sharing. In cooperation with customers, the company is developing and trialling innovative passenger interaction options, such as the next-stop indicator, modified seating configurations for greater comfort, advanced infotainment systems and intuitively usable solutions for passenger identification. The driver, too, benefits from connectivity. For example, they are quickly and conveniently notified of new passenger requests, in addition to being provided with real-time traffic information.
Optimised for corporate use
Cities are not alone in facing the challenge to make mobility sustainable and needs-based. Companies, too, are looking for flexible and efficient solutions for corporate transport. In this context, Mercedes-Benz Vans will present the "Corporate Shuttle", based on the ViaVan service, at the German International Motor Show for Commercial Vehicles.
"Corporate Shuttle" is Mercedes-Benz Vans' answer to one of the current challenges facing companies. It allows employees to move more flexibly across the company site or between individual locations. Conventional bus services with fixed departure times and stops can meet the sharp variations in demand only to a limited extent and cannot be changed at short notice. As in the city, therefore, "Corporate Shuttle" works on the principle of on-demand ride sharing without fixed timetables and stops. The needs are analysed in real time, with the routes of the available vehicles being adapted accordingly. An app guides employees to a virtual bus stop within walking distance of the starting point. The high flexibility and availability of the system makes it possible to reduce the number of company vehicles – which are often used only occasionally. In addition to improving the parking situation at the plant, this helps to cut operating costs thanks to optimal capacity utilisation.
Depending on requirements, the service can be operated with different vehicles, such as Sprinter, Vito or V-Class, to allow perfect adaptation and utilisation of the fleet. Due to its extensive connectivity and high versatility with regard to its interior and size, the new Mercedes-Benz eSprinter is particularly suitable for a range of on-demand ride sharing applications.
First pilot trials
"Corporate Shuttle" is already being successfully trialled and continuously improved at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Bremen. Other companies are already showing a strong interest in the service, for example, a pilot project recently started at BASF SE in Ludwigshafen.

Contemporary mobility for commercial users, now and in future: at the 2018 German International Motor Show for Commercial Vehicles, Mercedes-Benz Vans will demonstrate how efficiency, economy and reliability will soon be shaping the streetscape with new technological concepts: with the battery-electric eVito and eSprinter as well as the Concept Sprinter F-CELL technology vehicle. In day-to-day fleet operation, battery-electric vehicles will be measured against the same standards as conventionally powered vehicles. With the eVito, which will be available from autumn 2018, Mercedes-Benz Vans proves that electric models are competitive and that they can match conventional combustion engines on cost, depending on the application.
To meet as many transport needs as possible while allowing many different sectors to enter the world of locally emission-free electromobility, a second model, the eSprinter, will soon come onto the market. This large van will make its market debut next year. After that, it will be the Citan's turn to go electric.
When it comes to assessing the various powertrain options, the brand with the star has adopted a new approach since the eDrive@VANs strategy was unveiled: the customer's intended application is now the key factor. The choice of battery-electric drive or conventional combustion engine will be dependent solely on which represents the best solution for the particular application. In the medium-term future, the powertrain portfolio will be extended by addition of the fuel cell. The advantages of this technology are showcased by the Concept Sprinter F-CELL.
"A locally emission-free vehicle fleet, which nonetheless meets every expectation in terms of everyday utility, flexibility, reliability and economy: the eVito resolves these apparent contradictions. We are at the forefront of this trend and will exploit this momentum, adding the eSprinter to our range and, in the medium term, offering battery-electric drives for our entire van portfolio. The decision in favour of a particular powertrain variant must be determined by the intended use and not by the availability of the matching vehicle class. That is why we are expanding our eDrive@VANs strategy with the fuel-cell powertrain, which presents great opportunities in the medium term, especially for long-haul operators", says Volker Mornhinweg, Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans.
150 kilometres range, fully recharged after six hours
The new eVito will be used mainly for urban deliveries. Thanks to its range and load capacity, it also meets the needs of tradespeople and service technicians. An installed battery capacity of 41 kWh makes for a range of around 150 kilometres. Even in worst-case conditions, the vehicle is good for about 100 kilometres. The full range is again available after just six hours of recharging.
The battery-electric drive offers an output of 85 kW along with up to 300 Newton-metres of torque, making it well suited to urban use. The top speed can be adjusted to the particular application. If the eVito is used predominantly in the city, a maximum speed of 80 km/h conserves energy while increasing the range. Alternatively, it is possible to configure a maximum speed of 100 or 120 km/h.
The mid-sized van comes in two different wheelbases. The basic version with an overall length of 5140 millimetres has a maximum payload of 1015 kilograms, putting it on a par with the conventionally powered Vito. The extra-long version measures 5370 millimetres. Its generously sized cargo space can take a payload of up to 990 kilograms. The maximum permissible gross vehicle weight is 3200 kilograms. The positioning of the batteries also guarantees maximum flexibility with a load capacity between 6.0 and 6.6 m3: the batteries are mounted under the vehicle and do not therefore reduce the cargo space.
The energy management system makes an important contribution to maximising the range. Pre-conditioning, for example, allows the vehicle interior to be warmed up or cooled down before driving away. This not only makes for enhanced comfort, but also reduces the energy needed for air conditioning while on the road. This makes it possible to effectively avoid temporary load spikes. Another element is energy recovery. This develops its full potential primarily in urban traffic, where there are numerous deceleration phases. The eVito comes with three drive programs and four energy recovery levels. They take different usage parameters and individual driving styles into consideration, enabling the driver to get the most out of their vehicle at all times.
eSprinter has all the qualities of a segment pioneer
Next year, the eSprinter will follow hard on the heels of the eVito. This pioneer of the large van segment is the perfect companion, whether used as a mobile workshop or as a capacious delivery vehicle. The new eSprinter is intended in the first instance as a panel van with a high roof and a permissible gross vehicle weight of 3500 kilograms. As with the combustion-engined Sprinter, the maximum load capacity is 10.5 m3. An installed battery capacity of 55 kWh makes for an anticipated range of approximately 150 kilometres with a maximum payload of 900 kilograms. The second battery option lets customers give priority to other types of use. Three battery units with a capacity of 41 kWh allow a range of around 115 kilometres. In return, the maximum load capacity rises by around 140 kilograms to approximately 1040 kilograms.
The electric powertrain in the eSprinter has an output of 85 kW with a torque of up to 300 Newton-metres. As with the eVito, the maximum speed can be configured to suit the application. To a maximum speed of 80 km/h, 100 km/h or up to 120 km/h if necessary.
No compromises on safety or reliability
To enable the eVito and eSprinter to establish themselves on the market, their functionality, safety, comfort and everyday utility must be on a par with diesel-engined models. The same standards apply to their reliability, even during tough everyday commercial use, and to their reliable maintenance and service management. Mercedes-Benz Vans provides a round-the-clock service and comprehensive after-sales network with appropriately trained employees. In everyday fleet management, this service quality includes short maintenance and repair times as the basis for minimised downtimes. The distribution and service network ensures that a battery-electric fleet can be run economically and conveniently.
Customised overall system solution for each individual application
However, the eDrive@VANs strategy of Mercedes-Benz Vans includes not only the electrification of the vehicle fleet, but also a customised overall system solution for each individual fleet. This includes advice on vehicle selection, assistance with tools such as the eVAN Ready app, which can be used to check online whether battery-electric models can play a role in the customer's own fleet, as well as an overview of the total cost of ownership (TCO). Equally decisive for potential eVito and eSprinter users is an analysis of the organisational and technical circumstances at the premises of commercial customers. Finally, the inclusion of an intelligent charging infrastructure lays the foundation for conserving resources with a commercial fleet while remaining economically competitive.
Concept Sprinter F-CELL shows expansion of eDrive@VANs strategy
More than ever before, Mercedes-Benz Vans is making the choice of powertrain dependent on the maximum-possible benefit to the customer. Aside from the vehicle technology, the system weight, charging/refuelling time, range and economic efficiency are also taken into consideration. In future, Mercedes-Benz Vans will expand the eDrive@VANs strategy with the fuel cell. Based on the example of a semi-integrated camper van, the Concept Sprinter F-CELL showcases the entire breadth of the typical advantages of a fuel cell, from a long range to locally emission-free mobility. These are attributes that are also ideally suited for other applications, such as long courier trips or small intercity buses. The Concept Sprinter F-CELL unites fuel cell and battery technology in a plug-in hybrid. The intelligent combination of battery and fuel cell makes for an electric output of approximately 147 kW along with a torque of 350 Newton-metres. The three underfloor tanks hold a total of 4.5 kilograms of hydrogen, allowing a range of around 300 kilometres. If a longer range is required, it is possible to add another tank at the rear, increasing the range to up to 530 kilometres. As a plug-in hybrid, the Concept Sprinter F-CELL can "refuel" not only with hydrogen but also with electricity. This boosts the range by up to 30 kilometres.
Basis for almost limitless conversion options
The positioning of the hydrogen tanks under the vehicle, together with the front-end location of the fuel cell and the rear-wheel drive, make for maximum freedom when it comes to designing the interior. With a self-sufficient energy supply for the living area or the long range, the technology vehicle fully exploits its advantages as a travel companion or in other applications as a spacious load carrier.
The design of the Concept Sprinter F-CELL with rear-wheel drive and a relatively low system weight provides the greatest possible flexibility for additional conversions as well as for commercial applications with high payloads. With a modular system, the fuel cell can establish itself as an alternative to conventional or battery-electric powertrains for use over shorter distances for the maximum-possible number of use cases.

Adaptable down to the last detail
Over 1700 different Sprinter variants can be generated by combining body styles, powertrain configurations, cab designs, body lengths, tonnages and cargo space heights. With five options between 3250 and 4325 millimetres, the wheelbase can be chosen to suit the particular application. The vehicle length varies between 5267 and 7367 millimetres. This versatility makes the new Sprinter the vehicle of choice for a wide range of transport needs and sectors. Whether as a construction site vehicle, a van for parcel delivery services, a vehicle for service technicians or a VIP shuttle: the new Sprinter is up to any task.
Practical with a high load capacity
Loadable wheel arches and fully usable cargo space heights in combination with front-wheel drive make for increased versatility. Inside roof racks allow optimal use of the cargo space height. LED lighting strips ensure optimal visibility in the cargo space, while the rear doors can be opened as far as the side wall even more easily. The maximum load capacity is 17 m3. Super-single tyres as an alternative to twin tyres on the rear axle are now approved for gross vehicle weights of up to five tonnes. In this combination, the smaller wheel arches increase the loading width from 978 to 1229 millimetres. With rear-wheel drive, the new Sprinter covers a tonnage range between 3.0 and 5.5 tonnes permissible gross vehicle weight. Including the maximum permissible trailer load, the permissible gross combination weight increases to up to 8.75 tonnes for the semitrailer tractor.
Front-wheel drive, tractor head and new transmissions
The proven powertrain concept with rear- and all-wheel drive is now joined by a new, entry-level front-wheel drive. For reasons inherent in the design, the payload of this version increases by 50 kilograms compared to the rear-wheel drive variant. An 80-millimetre lower cargo space sill makes for significantly easier loading/unloading or entry/exit to and from the living/sleeping area of camper vans. The growing market for recreation vehicles is also served by a tractor head variant of the Sprinter, which is available only to bodybuilders. In combination with front-wheel drive, this allows maximum freedom in the design and use of bodies. The technical highlights of the new Sprinter include two new transmissions for front-wheel drive – the 9G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission with torque converter as an innovation in the large van segment and a likewise new 6-speed manual transmission. The 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission is also available for the first time for the all-wheel-drive Sprinter, combining exceptionally smooth gearshifts with high fuel efficiency.
Wide range of engines
The wide range of engines with outputs between 84 kW (114 hp) and 140 kW (190 hp) meets every need in the segment. With a displacement of 2.1 litres and in combination with rear-wheel drive, the four-cylinder diesel engine comes with a choice of three outputs: 84 kW (114 hp), 105 kW (143 hp) or 120 kW (163 hp). With front-wheel drive, the outputs range from 84 kW (114 hp) to 105 kW (143 hp) to 130 kW (177 hp). The most powerful version is reserved exclusively for the camper van segment. The new Sprinter is the only large van available with a six-cylinder engine. The 3.0-litre machine with 140 kW (190 hp) and a torque of 440 Newton-metres at 1600 to 2600 rpm impresses not only with its huge pulling power, but also with its excellent refinement and superb ride comfort. In addition to the highly efficient diesel engines, Mercedes-Benz Vans will also bring out a Sprinter with an electric powertrain in 2019. Depending on body type, wheelbase, roof height, drive configuration and engine variant, the fuel consumption figures of the new Sprinter vary between 6.8 and 9.7 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres (combined fuel consumption 9.7-6.8 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions: 253-178 g/km, provisional figures).
Leap in efficiency thanks to internet connectivity
With state-of-the-art connectivity options and the services of Mercedes PRO connect, the new Sprinter becomes part of the Internet of Things. In the interests of an integrated approach with a high level of safety and reliability, Mercedes-Benz Vans has taken a new direction and opted for deep vehicle connectivity. The collected data opens the way to new services with direct benefits. They are clearly superior to stand-alone solutions when it comes to safety and reliability. Simpler fleet management and optimised communications between fleet manager and driver are among the innovations designed to make everyday work easier and more efficient. This means an entirely new dimension of vehicle management for fleets. At the launch of Mercedes PRO connect as an ex-factory system, eight packages with central fleet-, vehicle-, driver- and location-based services were introduced in 19 European countries. These include Vehicle Supervision, Vehicle Operations, Fleet Communication, Maintenance and Repair Management and a digital Driver's Logbook. The new services are used, for example, with the all-new MBUX multimedia system, which has an up to 10.25-inch HD display, touch screen control and intuitive voice control.
New infotainment system obeys every word
There has also been a technological quantum leap with regard to voice control and voice output: The optimised voice control is activated by keywords, and also registers everyday speech. The infotainment system responds to the statement "The tank is empty" by suggesting filling stations in the vicinity or along the chosen route. Messages can also be dictated and are reliably recognised. A high-speed (LTE-capable) internet connection in the vehicle can be used either exclusively for the connectivity services of Mercedes PRO or as a hotspot to connect separate mobile devices.
Driver's cockpit sets standards
Ergonomically optimised and comfortable - these attributes make the cab of the new Sprinter an ideal workplace. The improvements include anatomically formed seats, Keyless Start and an improved air conditioning system. Electrically adjustable front seats with a memory function are new in the Sprinter segment. They store the seat/exterior mirror settings for up to three drivers – an important convenience in pool vehicles used by several drivers. The driver's seat Plus has flattened side bolsters on the seat cushion, e.g. for parcel delivery service drivers, who need to enter and exit frequently. A variable stowage concept ensures that everything has its place. The infotainment system is just one example of the all-new control and display logic in the cockpit. As already familiar from passenger car models, the instrument cluster with a large display consolidates all the indicator lamps between speedometer and rev counter. The display is controlled e.g. by touch controls on the left side of the multifunction steering wheel or the touchpad.
Low total cost of ownership (TCO) for impressive economy
An integrated view of the total cost of ownership (TCO) played a key role in the development of the new Sprinter. The engineers at Mercedes-Benz Vans made full use of additional optimisation potential with regard to the conventional engine and transmission variants. The efficiency measures aimed at lower fuel consumption range from reduced in-engine friction and optimised injection to the use of tyres with minimised rolling resistance. Minimised downtimes is also very important. Diesel-engined Sprinter variants with rear-wheel drive have maintenance intervals up to a maximum of 60 000 kilometres or two years (in the European markets). The newly introduced front-wheel drive variant is due for a service after a maximum of 40 000 kilometres or two years. Optimisation of the maintenance process also makes for noticeably improved efficiency. Optional connectivity services can, for example, send information on the condition of wear parts to the fleet manager while on the road, so that preventive maintenance can be planned to avoid expensive downtimes. The Sprinter is a master of all these disciplines, meeting every expectation in terms of a perfect and economical fleet vehicle.
Out in front when it comes to safety
Once again, Mercedes-Benz Vans fulfils its role as an innovation driver in the introduction of state-of-the-art safety technologies, including in the large van segment. These include radar-based Distance Assist DISTRONIC, Active Brake Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist and ATTENTION ASSIST. Crosswind Assist is, of course, also included as standard, helping to make van journeys considerably safer, especially at higher speeds, e.g. on motorways. Traffic Sign Assist draws additional attention to speed limits, no-entry and no-overtaking restrictions as well as the end of such restrictions. The assistance and control systems in the new Sprinter include a reversing camera showing its image in the rear-view mirror, a modern Parking Package with a 360-degree all-round view and a rain sensor and wiper with integral Wet Wiper System. The washer fluid is passed through the wiper arms, sprayed directly ahead of the wiper blades and wiped away with no delay – for optimum visibility even during the wiping process.
Merging of form and function
With the third generation, the exterior of the Sprinter enters a new era in which not only its qualities in solving transport problems are in demand. The vehicles in modern fleets are increasingly also being given the role of company representatives; especially in smaller and medium-size business, they act very much as a calling card. The third generation of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter defines the premium class in the large van segment – including in terms of digitalisation and connectivity. The focus is on Mercedes PRO – the Mercedes-Benz Vans brand for all current and future services – which offers solutions and digital services for everyday business. Available for fleets, Mercedes PRO connect optimises the communications between fleet manager, vehicles and drivers. The connectivity solution allows the online management of orders as well as the virtually real-time interrogation of vehicle information such as location, fuel level or maintenance intervals. Its advantages range from minimised downtimes thanks to proactive maintenance and repair management to clearly presented data for business analytics. Every fleet can benefit from the web-based service - from small businesses to key accounts. At the 2018 German International Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz Vans will unveil Mercedes-Benz Van Uptime, a future real-time digital diagnostic system, in addition to giving a peek preview of the use of digital services in the eVito.
Communication module (LTE) as basis and MBUX as upgrade
The technical basis is the communication module (LTE), which is installed in all Sprinter variants. It forms the interface between fleet manager (web-based vehicle management tool) and driver (Mercedes PRO connect app). This provides the driver with a pioneering solution that helps the fleet achieve greater transparency and efficiency.
The optional MBUX – the Sprinter's all-new Human Machine Interface (HMI) that is leading the way in the van segment – is particularly user-friendly for the Sprinter driver.

A free product adviser helps Mercedes-Benz business customers choose the right Mercedes PRO packages for their fleet and business. This process takes account above all of factors such as the sector, fleet size, annual mileage and route planning dynamics.

Unlike other solutions in the segment, the communication module (LTE) with high-speed internet connection for Mercedes PRO digital services is not tied to the installation of expensive infotainment solutions. Mercedes PRO services can also be used in Sprinter models without MBUX.
Mercedes-Benz Vans is unveiling an addition to Mercedes PRO at the 2018 German International Motor Show for Commercial Vehicles: Mercedes-Benz Van Uptime, the digital real-time diagnostic system, available from the Mercedes PRO Store and as part of the service contract. Intelligent van connectivity makes it possible for technical vehicle data to be evaluated and interpreted in real time. If action needs to be taken on the vehicle, Mercedes-Benz Van Uptime proactively provides concrete recommendations for action to guarantee maximum availability of the van. This avoids unscheduled downtimes and the associated loss of revenue.

- Self-performed Maintenance: Maintenance carried out in a timely manner can protect against wear and the failure of vehicle components, in addition to preventing unscheduled workshop visits with additional costs. Mercedes-Benz Van Uptime provides proactive information on necessary maintenance and gives concrete recommendations for maintenance operations that can be carried out on the vehicle by the owner themselves.
- Efficient management of repairs and maintenance: Maintenance and repair needs identified at an early stage are automatically communicated to the selected Mercedes-Benz Service partner. The scope of the Mercedes PRO connect "Maintenance and Repair Management" service is being considerably expanded to ensure comprehensive coverage of the vehicle components. Based on this information, the Mercedes-Benz service partner bundles the upcoming maintenance and repair work, where possible, and arranges appointments with the customer that are tailored to the upcoming maintenance needs as well as the customer's trip planning. The real-time transparency of the technical vehicle data helps to minimise the necessary workshop visits while saving valuable time and money.
- Urgent warnings: If the technical vehicle data indicates that a breakdown is imminent, the Mercedes-Benz Customer Assistance Centre (CAC) is contacted. The CAC identifies the nearest workshop and, with the customer's consent, immediately arranges a workshop visit. This allows the vehicle to be repaired immediately, using the necessary Mercedes-Benz genuine parts.
Enhanced comfort and convenience with Mercedes Benz User Experience (MBUX)
The new Sprinter with the MBUX multimedia system including 7- or 10.25-inch touch screen display fulfils the desire for greater comfort and convenience in combination with excellent, simple and intuitive operability. It is controlled from the steering wheel controls, the touch screen or the all-new voice control.
The MBUX multimedia system impressively displays its capabilities when used in conjunction with Mercedes PRO services. The new Sprinter also responds to "Hey Mercedes" and recognises everyday expressions. If the driver says "The tank is empty", the infotainment system replies with suggested filling stations nearby or along the indicated route. In addition, the navigation application from the "Improved Navigation" value-added package displays information such as fuel prices and weather data. The integration of artificial intelligence is a particular new feature: the telematics system gets to know the user from previous behaviour, suggesting suitable destinations, contacts or radio stations.
MBUX users also benefit from the new "what3words" address system. Mercedes-Benz is the first automotive manufacturer to use this coordinate system, which divides the world into squares of 3 metres x 3 metres and assigns a unique 3-word address to each square. This makes it even easier to navigate with greater accuracy to places without an exact address.

One van, two engines, three lengths and three powertrains – the Mercedes-Benz Vito is the versatile all-rounder among mid-sized vans with a permissible gross vehicle weight around 3.0 tonnes. Its payload and diversity of variants are among the highest in the segment, while its purchase price and maintenance costs are low. The range is being expanded by eVito, which will be available from autumn 2018. The exhibition highlights in Hanover include a new infotainment system as well as a sporty equipment line, the Vito Line SPORT.
As a medium-sized van, the Mercedes-Benz Vito adapts perfectly to a wide range of different requirements. The front-wheel drive is very light and, with the vehicle unladen or carrying only little weight, offers improved traction. It has a very high payload of around 1300 kilograms, although its purchase price and maintenance costs are low. Rear-wheel drive is the correct solution for all applications involving heavy weights, high towing capacities and, if required, exceptional driving dynamics. All-wheel drive is the answer to the need for maximum traction.
Comprehensive range of models for commercial users
From tradespeople to retail, service providers, shuttle services and taxis – the Vito is truly one vehicle for all. For example, the Vito panel van is available in a choice of three lengths. There is also the particularly favourably priced WORKER panel van for the cost-conscious customer. The Vito Mixto combines the advantages of panel van and Tourer.
The Vito Tourer is available as the functional Vito Tourer BASE, the versatile Vito Tourer PRO and the premium Vito Tourer SELECT. Thanks to this complete model family, the Tourer can accommodate all types of passenger transport.
Wide choice of length and weight variants
With its three lengths, Vito compact (4.90 metres), Vito long (5.14 metres) and Vito extra-long (5.37 metres), the Vito offers a wide choice. The Vito is additionally available in different weight variants up to a permissible gross vehicle weight of 3.2 tonnes.
The range of optional extras for the Vito is unusually extensive for a commercial vehicle. It includes numerous door/window variants as well as roof rails. A highly functional list of items is available for the cargo space, including a wooden floor, a rail system for securing loads and tie-down rails on the side wall and interior panels. Roof attachments and carrier systems as well as luggage compartment trays are available either ex-factory or as accessories.
Customers opting for the Vito Tourer are spoilt for choice when it comes to fitting out the passenger compartment and installing seating: the range includes two- and three-passenger bench seats as well as bunk/table packages. The seats can be installed on wood or plastic flooring, or on a floor with fine carpeting for use as an exclusive shuttle. Whether as a panel van, Mixto or Tourer, different heating and climate control systems make the time spent on board a pleasant one.
Safety first: numerous assistance systems
The Vito panel van was the first van to come as standard with airbags and a seat belt reminder for both driver and co-driver. The Vito Tourer PRO and Vito Tourer SELECT also impress with windowbags and thorax/pelvis sidebags in the front. It is possible to order windowbags in the rear for the Vito Tourer. With up to eight airbags in total, it sets the benchmark.
The standard equipment includes Attention Assist and Crosswind Assist, which compensates for the effects of gusts of wind on the vehicle. Tyre pressure monitoring is a further item of standard equipment on the Vito Tourer. In addition, the Vito is available with numerous other assistance systems to meet individual needs. Examples include Active Parking Assist, COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST, Blind Spot Assist and Lane Keeping Assist.
As an alternative to halogen headlamps, the Vito is optionally available with the Intelligent Light System (ILS), which consists of LED direction indicators, LED daytime running lamps, LED low beam and main beam as well as cornering light function. Depending on the road speed, the headlamps adapt for driving on motorways or country roads by varying the light distribution.
Now with new infotainment system and Vito Line SPORT
Innovations around the infotainment system will be on view at the 2018 German International Motor Show for Commercial Vehicles. The Audio 40 system with 7-inch touch screen and integral navigation impresses with its versatile communications and infotainment options. Its functions can be controlled from the touch screen in the usual way. The indications and displays of the navigation with 3D city views and landmarks are attractive and easy to understand. Further highlights include digital radio DAB+, smartphone integration via Apple® CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ as well as a Bluetooth® interface with audio streaming and hands-free function for making phone calls while driving with minimal distraction. Two USB ports allow mobile devices to be charged while driving. The Audio 40 system is optionally available for the Vito panel van, Vito Mixto, Vito Tourer BASE, Vito Tourer PRO and Vito Tourer SELECT.
Available since February 2018, the new equipment line Vito Line SPORT underscores the sporty character of the mid-sized van with numerous highlights. The Vito SPORT Line comes with a distinctive wrap on the bonnet and doors. Sporty side skirts plus bumpers and detachable parts in the body colour add to the dynamic character of the exterior. The chrome-plated radiator grille, roof railing and windows in the sliding doors on both sides add further accents. The use of heat-insulating glass all-round helps to keep the interior temperature down in strong sunlight. Black-tinted windows also allow privacy in the rear of the vehicle. A large panoramic roof is also optionally available.
Equally, the interior of the Vito Line SPORT is marked by striking contrasts. The highlights include seats in black artificial leather as well as the Chrome Interior package. Floor mats in velour add a further stylish touch. The steering wheel and gearshift lever in high-quality leather further underscore the sporty character. The firm sports suspension and 18-inch light-alloy wheels (optionally 19-inch) in an exclusive colour make for dynamic looks.

The Mercedes-Benz Citan made its debut in autumn 2012. Like every other model with the star, the company's smallest van has since been continuously improved and given new features. It is now excellently established on the market not only as an urban delivery vehicle, but also as a small family van. Its success is based above all on the combination of high functionality and economy as well as excellent ride comfort and an extensive package of safety systems. At the 2018 German International Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz Vans is presenting a new design package with stylish visual elements based on a concept vehicle.
Compact and flexible: ready for every challenge
With its compact dimensions and large cargo space, the Citan can be flexibly adapted to meet the most varied of needs. It is available ex-factory as a panel van, Mixto and Tourer, making it the ideal city vehicle for a wide variety of different applications. There is also the Citan WORKER panel van and the Citan CREW for especially price-conscious customers. The permissible gross vehicle weight of the Citan is between 1.8 tonnes and 2.2 tonnes. The "long" variant of the Citan is especially versatile, being available in three weight classes to meet every need.
The most popular model in the range is the panel van. With a pleasing driver's workplace, simple controls and finely tuned independent suspension, the Citan is extremely comfortable, agile and manoeuvrable as it makes its way through the city. It is also optionally available with the 6G-DCT dual-clutch transmission. Thanks to its large doors, low load compartment sill and generously dimensioned cargo space, the Citan leaves nothing to be desired when it comes to loading and unloading. A full-area partition in the panel van protects driver and co-driver from sliding or overturning cargo. To make sure that everything stays safely in place at the back, the cargo can be expertly secured using retaining straps and the standard-fit tie-down eyes.
The Citan Mixto combines the advantages of panel van and Tourer. The versatile five-seater scores with its folding rear bench seat, partition to the cargo space and two sliding doors. It is based on the extra-long version.
Safe on the road in city traffic
Like every Mercedes-Benz, the Citan comes with an extensive array of safety systems. These include – as standard on all variants – the ADAPTIVE ESP® electronic stability program, which takes the load status of the vehicle into consideration, Brake Assist and ABS anti-lock braking system. Also optionally available are assistance systems such as light and rain sensors, tyre pressure monitoring and a reversing camera, which shows the area behind the vehicle in the inside rear-view mirror.
Extras adapt the Citan perfectly to customer requirements
Numerous individualisation options allow the Mercedes-Benz Citan to be customized for use. Alongside other safety and comfort extras, the options include a host of functional features. Different partition systems, a folding co-driver's seat to increase the size of the cargo space, various door/window configurations and cargo space panelling are just some of the extensive range of possibilities. In addition, ex-factory accessories include roof racks, support systems and luggage compartment trays.
As an alternative to individual extras, Citan customers can also opt for a range of logically configured packages. The new Mercedes-Benz Citan is a true transport professional down to the last detail. Special bodybuilder conversions can be adapted to the vehicle technology by means of a special interface and a programmable special module.
With stylish visual elements for a sporty look
Despite already having distinctive, attractive looks, the Citan can now be further enhanced with a new design package. For this purpose, a concept vehicle based on the Tourer with a new design package will be presented at the German International Motor Show to allow initial customer feedback to be collected at the trade fair.
The Red design package enhances the exterior with colour accents while giving the Citan a sporty look. It also includes red wrap stripes under the front radiator and on the mirror housings, grey lateral sports stripes that extend under the sliding doors as far as the rear wheel arch, chromed radiator trim and a chrome moulding on the tailgate.
The interior, too, features colour accents. There is a choice of two styling packages. The Design Package interior colour includes red decorative rings on ventilation rings and speakers as well as red decorative stitching on the front seats and all headrests. The Styling Package interior chrome includes numerous chrome features.

On the construction site or farm during the day and with family and friends for leisure pursuits at the weekend – the Mercedes-Benz Pickup is not only a commercial vehicle but also a comfortable vehicle for everyday use. The X-Class unites the typical attributes of a pickup with the classic strengths of a Mercedes. It is rugged, has a high load capacity and is suitable for off-road use. At the same time, its ride comfort, driving dynamics, looks, individuality, safety features and connectivity are qualities commonly associated with a Mercedes passenger car. The X-Class thus meets the contemporary demands placed on a pickup by a wide range of customers around the world. On the world's pickup markets, the demand for a mid-sized pickup with typical passenger car attributes and comfort features has been steadily growing for years. Landowners, such as farmers in Chile or winegrowers in South Africa as well as business owners and building contractors in Australia or Europe, no longer wish to use their pickup exclusively as a workhorse, but also as a calling card for their company or as a comfortable and prestigious private vehicle. Mercedes-Benz is the first premium manufacturer to address these changed requirements.
Rugged, high load capacity, suitable for off-road use and stylish
With its progressive-dynamic design, the Mercedes-Benz Pickup manages the balancing act between ruggedness and stylishness. It embodies the typical, elegant style of a Mercedes-Benz while also being suitable for heavy cargoes and extreme terrain. Capable of handling a payload of up to 1.1 tonnes, it can pull up to 3.5 tonnes, such as a trailer with three horses. In terms of width, the load bed is designed to allow a Euro pallet to be loaded crosswise between the wheel arches. The X-Class is the only mid-sized pickup to come with cargo area lighting as standard.
The rugged ladder-type frame provides a base for the heaviest cargoes and the toughest of off-road conditions. Closed profiles make for particular strength and torsional stiffness. In addition, the rigid rear axle with its high articulation capability results in improved off-road traction. Thanks to its all-wheel drive, low-range reduction ratio as standard, central differential lock and optional rear-axle limited-slip differential, the X-Class is capable of mastering difficult terrain with supreme confidence.

Powerful performance from four or six cylinders
Powerful traction comes courtesy of a four- or six-cylinder engine. The 2.3-litre four-cylinder diesel engine is available in output variants with 120 kW/163 hp (combined fuel consumption: 7.6-7.4 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions: 200-195 g/km) and 140 kW/190 PS (combined fuel consumption: 7.9-7.3 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions: 207-192 g/km)6. Both models come with either manually selectable all-wheel drive or just rear-wheel drive. Power transfer is by a 6-speed manual transmission. A 7-speed automatic transmission is optionally available for the more powerful 140 kW engine. Unlike in most other mid-sized pickups, the manual transmission includes a quiet and convenient cable shift. This means that the gearshift lever is mechanically decoupled from the transmission, which stops vibrations from being transmitted.
The 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine in the top-of-the-range X 350 d 4MATIC (combined fuel consumption: 9.0-8.8 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions: 236-230 g/km)7 develops 190 kW/258 hp along with a peak torque of 550 Newton-metres. The X 350 d 4MATIC comes as standard with permanent all-wheel drive and 7G-TRONIC PLUS 7-speed automatic transmission with shift paddles on the steering wheel and ECO start/stop function. With permanent all-wheel drive, the drive power is distributed between the front and rear axles with a fixed torque distribution of 40 to 60 percent. This rear bias makes for enhanced driving dynamics along with higher lateral on-road acceleration as well as improved traction on acceleration. DYNAMIC SELECT allows the top-of-the-range model to be individually configured - from relaxed/comfortable to active/sporty.
A new world of driving dynamics and comfort on the road
Exceptional on-road performance together with optimal driving stability and high cornering speeds comes courtesy of the wide track (1632 millimetres at the front and 1625 millimetres at the rear), long wheelbase (3150 millimetres) and sophisticated comfort suspension with comfortable spring and damper tuning. The comfort suspension is designed for a high level of driving dynamics and ride comfort in on-road use while also providing optimal off-road capability in combination with the all-wheel drive. The suspension consists of a double-wishbone front axle and multi-link rear axle with rigid axle section and helical springs on both axles, making the vehicle ideally suited for carrying heavy cargoes. This combination guarantees excellent comfort on long journeys and impressive driving dynamics. An added benefit on long journeys is the low NVH (noise, vibration, hardness).
Three equipment lines, optional extras and a comprehensive range of accessories
In addition to the various powertrain variants, the X-Class offers a host of individualisation options. There is a choice of three equipment lines, which differ in design, equipment level and functionality: the basic PURE variant for classic-rugged use, PROGRESSIVE for higher standards of value appeal and comfort, and POWER as the high-end variant for an urban lifestyle.
Further individualisation is possible thanks to a wide range of optional extras, such as an electrically opening rear window. In addition, Mercedes-Benz has designed an extensive range of accessories to allow users to individually configure their X-Class even further. The range includes sports bar, styling bar, rollcover, hardcover, hardtop, stowage box, load bed lining, lashing rails in the load bed and technical underbody protection. These accessories will gradually be added to the X-Class model range.
Exceptionally comprehensive range of safety systems
The X-Class features a comprehensive array of comfort and safety features seldom seen in this segment. The basis for a high level of occupant protection comes courtesy of the particularly robust bodyshell with high-strength passenger cell, plus a structure with front and rear ends capable of absorbing energy by selective deformation. In terms of passive safety, the standard equipment includes seven airbags and the i-Size attachment system for two child seats.
With Active Brake Assist, Lane Keeping Assist (Active Lane Keeping Assist exclusive to the X 350 d 4MATIC) and Traffic Sign Assist, three driver assistance systems are available for enhanced active safety and comfort. Added to these are Trailer Stability Assist, a tyre pressure monitoring system, an emergency call system, cruise control, and LED headlamps that deliver the brightest light output in the segment thanks to six LEDs each. A reversing camera or a 360-degree camera is available as an option. In addition, Mercedes-Benz is the only manufacturer in the segment to opt for large, internally ventilated brake discs on both axles as standard. Together they ensure short stopping distances, good response and high thermal loadability.
Intelligently connected thanks to Mercedes me connect
A communication module with permanently installed SIM card allows X-Class drivers in over 20 European markets to benefit from the extensive range of Mercedes me connect services while being able to access their vehicle from their smartphone. The services include Live Traffic Information, the Mercedes-Benz emergency call system, the standard services of Maintenance Management, Accident Recovery, Breakdown Management and Remote Interrogation of Vehicle Status and Vehicle Monitoring. If using the Mercedes me app, complete door-to-door navigation is also possible.

Cooperation with bodybuilders and conversion specialists is particularly important for Mercedes-Benz Vans and one of the success factors in the van business. The company is now restructuring its partnership model. In future, Mercedes-Benz Vans will not only support bodybuilders and conversion specialists in the marketing of partner solutions. Among other things, it will also strengthen the marketing of ex-factory solutions.

With our revised partnership model, we aim to strengthen our cooperation while at the same time offering bodybuilders new ways to position themselves on the market as a partner of Mercedes-Benz Vans. Two partner labels in future
With the restructuring, Mercedes-Benz Vans will in future have two labels for two different partnership levels. Mercedes-Benz VanPartner, which is the basis for a closer cooperation, is aimed at bodybuilders who impress with their expertise and know-how in customised partner solutions. Mercedes-Benz VanSolution Partner is the partner label for standardised ex-factory bodybuilder solutions. Mercedes-Vans awards this label to strategic partners, who are additionally involved in the development of new products.
New opportunities for image promotion
With this label, bodybuilders and conversion specialists can demonstrate their strength, while their importance for Mercedes-Benz Vans is made immediately apparent. There are also new ways in which they can promote their own image: in interiors, on exterior surfaces, with brochures, online, at trade fairs or in business correspondence: their close affiliation with Mercedes-Benz Vans is made visible.
Mercedes-Benz Conversion World goes online for German International Motor Show
In addition, the currently over 300 certified partners in 35 countries can present their solutions at Mercedes-Benz Conversion World (https://conversion-world.mercedes-benz.com), the new digital point of entry for end customers. Mercedes-Benz Conversion World will go online simultaneously with the German International Motor Show for Commercial Vehicles. The platform showcases conversion solutions for eight sectors, from construction, courier/express/parcel services, logistics and passenger transport to emergency/municipal vehicles, recreational vehicles and camper vans. The platform is available in 13 languages. In addition to searching for and comparing products, end customers can use the platform to get into direct contact with Mercedes-Benz dealers around the world.

Maximum flexibility in terms of rental period along with tailor-made vans to suit the particular application: that is the success formula which Mercedes-Benz Vans Mobility GmbH (MBVM), founded two years ago, has successfully established a new rental offering. Under the brand name "Mercedes-Benz Van Rental", the main target is commercial customers, although private customers are also increasingly being served. At the heart of the offering is a highly flexible vehicle rental service specialised for the first time in vans. On the back of strong demand and broad acceptance, the size of the fleet has grown to several thousand vehicles since the company, which belongs to Daimler Financial Services AG, was founded. One year after Mercedes-Benz Van Rental was launched, the service is being expanded internationally, along with the growing development of new customer groups with an extensive vehicle portfolio: from March 2019, Mercedes-Benz Van Rental will also be available in Spain, with more European markets to follow. In addition, the expansion of the model range with the Mercedes-Benz X-Class pickup and Marco Polo camper van is also targeting private customers for the first time.
Transfer to additional markets and offering to other customers

Meeting spikes in orders by conveniently picking up a rental vehicle from a rental centre
In volatile markets and times, speed and flexibility are key to the success of a business. Tackling temporary spikes in orders in an appropriate and profitable manner is a complex task that requires great administrative effort in terms of fleet management. It sometimes calls for innovative ownership and rental solutions. This is where Mercedes-Benz Vans Mobility GmbH comes in, with Mercedes-Benz Van Rental.
As part of the strategic future-oriented initiative "adVANce" of Mercedes-Benz Vans, the young company can point to extremely high expertise when it comes to vans, combined with a deep knowledge of the rental market. Some 60 employees in Berlin are responsible for coordinating the product offering, continuously adapting it to changing market requirements and customer needs. The rental vehicles are managed and handed over to customers at around 100 rental centres in Germany, which are linked to Mercedes-Benz branches or Mercedes-Benz authorised dealers. The dense service network thus not only guarantees the greatest possible proximity to the customer, but also minimises the administrative effort for the customer when picking up or returning a vehicle.
Flexible and customisable rates
At the heart of the Mercedes-Benz Van Rental offering is the flexibility in terms of the length of the rental contract. Periods from 24 hours up to 24 months are possible. This means that the rental fleet can serve not only to make up for the short-term non-availability of vehicles - such as during unscheduled workshop visits - but also to cover spikes in business. There are two rental rates, which differ in terms of flexibility and customisability: At a slightly higher price, the "Flex Tariff", designed for short-term rentals, offers customers maximum flexibility when it comes to changing the vehicle or returning it early if the van is not needed for as long as originally planned. Standard vehicles can be rented under this model. A weekend rate also makes the service of interest to private customers wishing to rent a van on a short-term basis.
The "Fix Tariff", on the other hand, offers longer-term rentals from upwards of three months with a high degree of flexibility as regards the rented vans: from customised sector-specific solutions (e.g. refrigerated vans) to a customer-specific vehicle wrap, there are plenty of options. With this tariff, however, returning the vehicle early incurs an additional fee. With this wide-ranging offer, Mercedes-Benz Vans Mobility GmbH enables its customers to optimally plan their individual transport requirements, in order to address capacity bottlenecks in the best possible way, to optimally manage their fleet costs and, ultimately, to obtain high transparency of costs.
More rental options and added flexibility will gradually be added to the portfolio. These "add-on services" include Counterless Rental and VAN2SHARE software, which lets the rented vehicles be independently assigned to several drivers within the fleet.
From Citan to pickup to Sprinter as deep-freeze vehicle
The MBVM fleet covers the entire Mercedes-Benz Vans product range with a mix of standard and sector-specific vehicles. For commercial customers, the panel van plays a major role, for example, when it comes to courier, express and parcel services. The Citan, Vito and Sprinter cover every commercial need. Its versatility also makes the panel van a perfect companion as a spare parts store on wheels or as a workplace for service technicians. The fleet also includes box bodies with or without tail lift as well as the Sprinter as a pickup for use on construction sites. Just recently, as a sign of the fast growth in fresh-food transport, the Kerstner company in Hesse took delivery of around 100 additional Mercedes-Benz Sprinters with refrigerated bodies. The Vito panel van is also available for refrigerated deliveries of fresh produce. Other sector-specific solutions from the mobility service provider include deep-freeze vehicles based on the Sprinter as well as vehicles with shelving systems. Customers can currently choose from over 600 specially converted rental vehicles.
Customers from the passenger transport sector have a choice of three different models: while the V-Class comes with seven seats, the Vito Tourer can take eight passengers plus driver. The Sprinter Tourer offers even more room with nine seats and extra stowage space. Examples of how Mercedes-Benz Van Rental vehicles can be used for passenger transport include the Flex Pilot ride-sharing trial in Stuttgart between Daimler subsidiary moovel and Stuttgart trams (SSB) as well as the planned cooperation between Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) and ViaVan - a joint venture between Mercedes-Benz Vans and Via.
X-Class and Marco Polo for a long dream holiday or a last-minute trip
The Mercedes-Benz Van Rental fleet is now being expanded with two models aimed mainly at the needs of private customers: the X-Class and the Marco Polo. The rugged pickup and the comfortable camper van provide the perfect basis for, among other things, a long holiday, a last-minute weekend trip or the transport of bulky goods. The offer is aimed at customers wishing to benefit from the particular advantages of the X-Class and Marco Polo for a limited period of time.
